I have a c5 2.2hdi auto 2001. I'm disappointed with a fuel consumption of 36-38mpg on a long run. I drive pretty steady too! The car was recently serviced at Citroen at 60k. You will all know that this model is crying out for an extra gear. My car will not go into top until 50mph which means most of the time driving round in 3rd. Also, descending hills it will change down to a low gear very early, sometimes even into 1st! Is it possible to have the gear change points altered in the interests of better economy? I know the gear box is addaptive to driving style but it hasnt adapted properly to my steady driving!! Thanks.

I have the same problem, the only way I can be economical is to drive mostly in manual mode. I tend to only use auto in very heavy traffic. Sorry I am not able to help. Please let me know if you find anything. Regards. HM.

Hi Guys,

As you can see I have a 2006 2.0 HDI Excl Est 6-speed Auto.

The Official (combined) mpg for this car in its 6 speed manual version is 47.1

The Official (combined) mpg for my car in its 6 speed Auto version is 39.8

Now this means there is a 15.5% hit on fuel consumption when using the 'Super-Duper' AisinSeikei/BorgWarner Auto Adaptive 6 speed Gearbox.

Its used on many different car makes.

Why the hell in over 60 years of Automatic Gearbox design do they come up with a gearbox with such a poor (fuel) efficiency.

I struggle to get 38mpg in my C5 and my driving is mainly rural at 1200 miles per month.

My old XM 2.1 TD S2 Auto Est used to get 40mpg. !!!!

Is there someone out there that can tell me what is so wonderful in the production of a really modern gas guzzling car ???

Looking forward to hearing from you all

Why do people spend so much extra money on something that simply heats ATF?

The last 60 years of autobox development has 40 of those years invested in trying to make the auto work with petrol engines. Only in the last 10 years has the direct engine with massive torque come along, and yet the auto boxes on these cars still slip the torque converter a lot of the time, heating ATF and wasting diesel.

Save money, get a car with a manual box next time and drive in the highest possible gear most of the time.

Job done.

Here's a tip - if you have H3+ then driving at just under 110 km/h will save you money. Why? At 110 km/h the car drops at the front and rear by different amounts to increase down force and stability. More down force=more drag=more fuel used.

Try it yourself!

Hi johnnyb, i have the 2litre petrol auto and have noticed that the consumption goes up and down like a newly weds nightie! but at a steady sixty the display informs me i am getting between 40 and 50mpg!? How accurate this gizmo is i have no idea but i am pleased with the consumption so far but not pleased with the price of the ruddy fuel! Getting it converted to gas soon!

Cheers Mart
