Guest richardw Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 I have 2004 2.0 HDI with vibration on the steering wheel between 60 - 70 mph Below or above these speeds it is hardly noticeable but quite pronounced in the 60 - 70 mph range The vibration is not related to braking but is more noticable during periods or acceleration or deceleration. I have had the wheels balanced and the tracking checked - any other thoughts appreciated ! Thanks :-) Quote
72dudes Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Richardw, Worth getting the wheels re-balanced somewhere else, as it certainly sounds like wheel balance to me. I've posted somewhere else about this, but if you have the wheels without the centre hub which are located via 4 bolts, then they are notoriously hard to balance. I believe with a 2004 version though you may have "normal" wheels but worth checking. I went to 6 different tyre outlets trying to get rid of a vibration, each one claimed they had the latest equipment and could balance the wheels. Luckily, if they fail, you don't pay. :( Another possibility is the tyres themselves, check if one of them is not completely round. Any tyre fitter can check for this but don't be taken in by bs.....check balance and pressures first before shelling out for new rubber. Good luck. Quote
Guest EddyBaby Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 I've had exactly the same problem with my C5 110hp. I don't feel it thru the steering wheel, but both me and any front seat passenger can feel the vibration thru ones bum. I've had the front wheels balanced umpteen times by both Citroen and KwikFit (who at last had the centre boss available) but the vibration remains. At least this was one of the faults not described by Citroen as a "characteristic" of the C5!! Quote

This is most probably REAR wheel balance which is out. There may also be a slight vertical vibration of the steering wheel on certain surfaces. Surprised Kwik Fit did not suggest balancing the rears. What am I saying, they'll probably say you need new tyres all round. Quote

I' ve had wheels balanced @a Citroen dealer with special hub adaptor for alloys but problem still persists. Will ask again to have all wheels balanced and let you know how I get on. Quote
Ronin Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Always, always get all 4 wheels balanced at the same time. Never take it for granted that the front pair are causing the vibration so eliminate the possibilty. Check all the tyres, are the front treads on both wheels the same depth? i.e. 6mm on one side, 3mm on the other side. Uneven tread can cause vibration even though the tires are perfect. Are the tyres the same make? It can make a difference, especially on the front pair. I once had a vibration nightmare on my Citroen AX GT, The tyre and exhaust centre I used balanced the front wheels, no difference. Balanced the rear wheels, no difference.! I took it back and while talking to the tyre technician as he was about to re-balance the N/S/F wheel I noticed clumps of dry mud stuck between the alloy ridges on the spokes. I commented on it and the technician removed the dry mud. He balanced the wheel and did the same to the O/S/F .... Presto, vibration gone!He would never have thought that the mud would have caused an issue and they don't often check unless its a 4x4 etc... It went down from 55grams to just 15 grams of balance weights.Moral of the story is never take things for granted. Take the time to check everything , even if it means taking one wheel off at a time, putting the spare on and pressure washing them. Many annoyances on cars have simple solutions. Quote
stimulator Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Change the fronts over with the rears and see what happens. On my old Pic therew as a vibration in the rear of the car at 65 to 70. turned out that the rear nearside tyre had a lump in the centre of the tread. New tyre no vib Quote
