andy Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Im getting my temp overheat lamp coming on with the stop lamp and the audable warning, yet the temp gauge reads normal. It only comes on at around 90 to 95 oC and the radiator fan comes on . I have changed the temp sensor, but it made no diffence. Oh by the way the car is a 1400cc 8 valve motor of 2001 vintage. Any help please!!! Quote
techbod Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 just answered a similar question, so it has over heat light and temp gauge ( the fans cut in but do you get heat into the car? ) if not then air in the system,if yes then its probably a wire short issue and will require a diagnostic by an electrician or simply check all the wires are on tight and not fouled with the disastrous green fur caused by bad earth which would short it out, just a guess though Quote
techbod Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 check these symbols out at the very bottom of the link ans see if the overheating lamp is the cat over heating and not the coolant, http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...en-GBGB285GB285 Quote
andy Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 check these symbols out at the very bottom of the link ans see if the overheating lamp is the cat over heating and not the coolant, http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...en-GBGB285GB285 many thanks for a promt reply, your information is very intresting. The difference with your reply is that my xsara is not overheating but the overheat lamp is coming on which I asume that this then brings on the stop lamp followed by the audible warning. As I said the temp gauge is reading only 92oC to 95oC when the temp overheat lamp comes on, which is just a small amount over normal.I have changed the temp gauge sensor which I thought also housed the overheat lamp, but now not sure as the haynes manual I was using for referance only goes up to the year 2000, and my car is a 2001 model.again any help is greatfully receved!!!! techbod Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 the fan cuts in at approx 85c so 92-95c is as if it were stuck in a traffic jam and the fan is working hard to cool the system so with this information I would suspect all the speeds of the fan are not working and that could be a couple of relays are down ( the fans have 3 speeds and 3 relays ) im not on my main computer so I cant say where they are so perhaps someone will tell you Quote

andy Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 many thanks techbod you were very close wirh your answer. It was to do with the second fan , but not the relays, but it was the resistor that controls the low heat fan.I did not find it my self ,as I had to put it in a garage to be fixed as I didnt have a wire diagram for the model that my car is.Is there anywhere on this site that can supply current wiring diagrams????? many thanks andy Quote
mattdutton Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 I had the same problem, & yes I feel your pain, every1 thinks your car overheats, when you know it doesn't!!!! lol I got an auto-electrician out in the end. It was a coiled wire resistor located just above the front bumper (remove the plastic trim), which, when removed had visibly blown & a piece was missing (very easy to identify) It is definitely this that's the problem, with me anyway. (1st fan speed not coming on, so the faster one kicking in at 90) Got a part number for it somewhere, just pm me if anyone wants it. Matt Quote
