  1. Hi All, My Xsara HDi 110 53 reg takes ages to warm up in the morning. The thermostat is new but due to how efficient the engine is it still takes ages. Anyhow, when I was changing the clutch I noticed a unit in the feed pipe to the heater matrix with what looks like 4 glow plugs in it, an auxilary electric water pre-heater! I followed the two cables to a box on the bulkhead with two 40amp fuses & 2 relays inside. When I operated the relays manually the unit heated up & you could hear the water simmering, however when the car is started on a cold morning the relays do not operate (both have been tested & work fine). Does anybody know what switches the relays (both have separate feeds) & at what temerature etc. Thanks, Steve.
  2. Be carefull if you solder it in as it it a fuse which blows when it gets above a certain temp, it has a very soft metal inside (thats why it is crimped). It is designed to cut the power if the resistors get a bit too hot (ie if the fan seizes up). The heat of the soldering iron can make it pop! ;)
  3. At long last I've found the fault! First I removed the awkward relays in the compartment behind the radiator cowl (pain in the a**e) and found the contacts corroded, cleaned them up but still no go. http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa65/IdleSteve/IMG_2401.jpg No power was getting to the relays, all the fuses were OK or so I thought  How many people knew there was some fuses UNDER the fuse box by the battery  See the picture below, I only found out by accident when I was checking the connection of the wire to the top fuse which the handbook said was for the fan! http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa65/IdleSteve/IMG_2398.jpg You can clearly see the 50A fuse which had blown! Doh  The fan now works great. Well worth knowing. :)
  4. Hi, hope you can help :( I have just bought a Xsara Hdi 110 2003 which had a seized up cooling fan (A/C working when driving but cut out at standstill due to the fan not running). I replaced it with a good one from the breakers but when this didn't work I checked the two resistors in the radiator shroud and these were open circuit on the thermal fuse (must of overheated due to the excess current and no draught from the fan) anyhow I happend to have a couple of spares from the same car the fan came off, these were ok and were fitted. :) The problem now is that it still doesn't work when the A/C is turned on, I have checked all the fuses I can find including the fuse box next to the battery (not got a handbook yet, one is coming off ebay soon). I have a feeling there maybe somthing I have missed which may have burnt out due to the high current which the siezed fan will have been drawing. :) I left the engine running to see if the fan would cut in when the engine temp increased, however after idleing for 30 mins it had not reached 90oc (efficient these Diesels), so I gave that up. Any info would be great. Cheers, Steve. PS is the thermostat easy to change? Mine opens at about 65 Deg. :)
