Thanks all for the advice, Howard

Hi, I have the same problem with my C5 and I'm about to change the drop links, just wondered if anyone noticed if the car felt like it was stepping out at the rear when cornering and going over small bumps in the road. The problem is getting worse as the rattling does, just thought they might be related. Thanks Howard

Hi, I too had this problem so I've tried stripping the fuse box out and cleaning it, including all of the connectors. If your going to try this procedure be sure to disconnect the battery and clean it with electrical contact cleaner, NOT WD40 or anything similar! The contact cleaner will evaporate eventually but be sure it is completely dry before reconnecting the fuse box and the battery, leave it over night if needed! There's no guarantee this works but the fault hasn't re-appeared since I did it and its cheaper than a new fuse box. The warnings I had on the dash were depollution fault, eps fault and low engine oil pressure, in succession then the engine cut out. Hope this helps, I will post again if the fault comes back. Howard

Thanks Paul, as always invaluable information.

Hi all, I have a C5 tourer 08 2.0l hdi. Just had a fault appear which says low engine oil pressure warning and the engine stops running but does then re-start and runs ok. This is the 2nd time its happened in two days. Could this possibly be a problem with the oil pump failing. Any ideas would be welcome . Thanks Howard.

Removed belt and it sounds the same. I might just be worrying over nothing but just want to be sure before it gets costly. Thanks -

here should be the links for two videos of knocking noise when cold and when the engine is up to temp. http://youtu.be/kHn_uudG_-Q http://youtu.be/Wb65zPLoyw0 -
Hi Parkesie, I did try to tighten the hexi nut on the clamp shown in the picture above. It only moved about 1/8 of a turn but it hasn't leaked since, I'm not convinced that it made any difference but its worth a try as you can reach it by just removing the wheel and a long ext bar. The fluid emptied out when it was frozen one night, I suspect the seals may have shrunk (like the space shuttle) :-) but i am just guessing. Cheers Howard.

Cheers, I will give it a try. This is the same car that the power steering fluid leaked over night, onto my drive but it never leaked again and I couldn't find exactly where it came from. I did manage to tighten the hexi head bolt where the high/low pressure pipes go into the rack about 1/8 of a turn but I don't think it was enough to cause such a big leak. Thanks Howard -

Hi. Just an update on the knocking when cold problem. I've now removed and replaced the sump nut and flushed the engine. I used correct oil as suggested in the earlier post ( thanks for the info) but the problem still persists. I don't think it's an injector knock as the car runs fine cold or warm, but the knocking does appear to be getting worse when cold. Just wondering if anyone has tackled replacing the lifters before and is it a massive job. I'm not frightened to have a go but is it something I should leave for a garage. I will try to upload a video of the problem when cold and when it's warm to compare the two sounds. -
I am negotiating with the dealer to see if he will pay for the replacement pipes and seals, I will let you know how much they costs to supply and fit once its done. Hopefully this will solve the leak. Thanks Howard

I also remember seeing the same post but not sure where. I have had the car in and it is leaking from the high and low pressure pipes as they enter the rack. As the rack has apparently been overhauled the next course of action is replacing the pipes if seals can't be found separately. This is in the hope that the faces inside the rack aren't damaged. Can u recommend the best place to buy from, would it be citroen direct? Thanks Howard

Hi Paul, on reflection I think I may have it repaired myself and try to reclaim the cost from the dealer. I managed to find the source of the leak today and took a picture. It seems to show its coming from the union where the flow and return pipes attach to the rack, next to the steering column. It appears to have a figure 8 shaped bracket that clamps over the pipes to hold them into position. The fluid can be seen running off the pipe in the picture On closer inspection the figure 8 clamp looks and feels like it is broken at the bottom edge underneath the lower pipe I am able to move the pipe 10mm either way and can see the seal around the pipe. I have also realised that the leak occurred on a night with a heavy frost on Friday, possibly the seal contracted allowing the fluid to seep past the seal. It doesn't appear to be losing any fluid when the I am going to try to upload the pic if that helps. Do you think I could find a replacement clamp/bracket without buying a complete rack. Thanks for help on this matter

Hi John , Thanks for the info on the rack, I thought they would be more expensive than that, so I will suggest it as an option before returning the car. The dealer has told me he spent £1000 on the original repairs, which is hard to believe. I have been in touch with citizens advice and they tell me that because the fault is a pre sale issue, I should be within my rights to return the car if the problem can't be resolved after giving the dealer reasonable chance ( 3 attempts) the resolve the problem.

Hi, I bought my C5 tourer 58 138 hdi back in may 2013, before purchasing it I identified a leak on the power steering rack and agreed that the dealer would repair the problem before the sale. This was done, but since that time it has been back twice for the same issue and not repaired successfully. The leak was apparently coming from the steering rack seals, which were only all replaced on the last repair visit. This I was told, was the reason why the problem wasn't resolved on the first two attempts. The same fault has now returned for the forth time! On this occasion with a total loss of fluid overnight on the driveway. I can now only assume that there is an internal problem with the rack, which is possibly damaging the seals. I have lost all faith in the dealers ability to repair the fault and intend to return the car for a full refund and to recover all moneys spent on the vehicle since I purchased it. I have posted this thread as a warning to potential buyers (not a moan) to check for this kind of problem before buying a C5, as I have discovered to my great cost this is a common problem with the power steering. I do intend to purchase another C5 tourer as I love the car, but will have it inspected professionally this time. Any views on the reason for this problem would be welcome, so I know what to look for on my next purchase. Thanks Howard.

Yes I think so, I checked in the manual before buying it and then asked Halfords to recommend the correct type, which matched what the book said. -

Yes your right it is an 8mm hexi socket but it has completely sheared the faces on the inside. When I've compared it with the new one, its looks like the old one isn't as deep and therefore not allowing the socket to seat in the nut. It may be an imperfection in the old nut. I'am going to ask the garage to spot weld the socket into the nut and let them try to release it with the right tools. Once again thanks for your help. -

Thanks for the information Paul, the sump plug faces have completely stripped, so its a garage job for that. It's the next task on the list with an engine flush. Thanks for deleting the other post, I couldn't work out how to do it. Cheers Howard. -
Hi all, I have a C5 Tourer 58 plate HDI 138. When its started it is very noisy until the oil has got up to temp, to me it sounds like one of the hydraulic cam lifters is not getting enough oil, but only guessing. Once warm it sounds fine but I am worried it may be causing long term damage if not fixed. Could it just need a good engine oil flush, to clean the oil ways or could the lifters be worn? The oil has been changed but the sump nut was stuck in, so it had to be sucked out, I have no idea how old the oil was before it was changed 3k ago (80k on the clock). Service records say 76k but I doubt it. I am quite handy under the bonnet, so not scared to tackle the job if required. Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks Howard
