  1. The standard fit speakers were - it's fair to say - utter rubbish.
  2. I replaced all four with custom fit pioneers Ts1702i - they come with adapters and were extremely easy to fit. Huge improvement in sound. I'd like to replace the tweeters but they're just too pricey.
  3. It was the idle air control valve which is attached to the throttle. Following this, garage did a reset of the "auto adaptives" - seems to be running fine now! The slight whistling noise from the top of the engine at idle - or a little more - is nothing to worry about.
  4. Is the fuel filter bothersome to change. I recall on the Focus that it was a bugger to get at! The air filter was changed at the service!
  5. I perhaps didn't explain the problem properly! :) When I'm driving in traffic (under 30mph) and I let off the throttle and reapply lightly the engine jerks a few times and then runs fine. I also notice when I start the car and it's warming up - when I'm stopped - the idle is a bit lumpy and you can fee it in the car... The car hadn't been used much - laid up since December last, only every covered about 4,000 miles per year and was driven very gently. One other thing - the NCT (MOT) - last year the rear anti slip alignment test : the limits are +14 to -18 m/km. The car was exactly at -18. I am told there are no adjustments that can be made to the rear of the C5, there is no play in the bearings, the car feels absolutely stable and the tyres are wearing evenly. I was under the car recently and am amazed at how clutter free the suspension area is - quite amazing how a single sphere on each side operates the rear suspension!
  6. Thanks Paul - I'll do this. I noticed that the throttle cable, where it enters the throttle, seems quite loose. It comes up very easily when pulled. The pedal itself is fine. If it's neither of those what would you look at next?
  7. My C5 1.8 has 53,000 miles and runs well. However, recently, I notice that when I'm driving on a light throttle or let the throttle off to reduce speed, the car starts jerking quite strongly. In traffic this is quite annoying. My friend who works for Citroen did a diagnostic test using Lexia and "Intermittent Fault, Richness Regulation" appeared. It did not throw up any code. The car has recently been serviced - including new spark plugs. My friend describes the jerking as an intermittent misfire. The car accelerates without any issue and otherwise runs fine. Any ideas what the cause of this might be?
  8. The ride is only a little hard at low speeds - it's grand from 40mph on. Does the hydractive fluid last indefinitely or has it to be renewed like brake fluid? I see a deal with fixed priced servicing for Citroen cars over four years old
  9. I have just bought a 2002 C5. I find the sound quality off the speakers quite poor and there can be resonance at some frequencies. I removed the grill on one of the doors and can see why - the OEM speakers look like rubbish! I think it's great that you can remove the grille and speaker without removing the door trim - which can be a right bother! Does anyone know what the speaker diameter and depth is for the door speakers. Also, is it just a matter of unscrewing what is there and popping new ones in? Will new speakers improve the sound quality or is it also worth replacing the head unit (standard Citroen unit fitted). Thanks in advance!
  10. This looks like a really useful forum/resource. :) I recently bought my first Citroen - a 2002 1.8 petrol, one owner, 50,000 miles and a full Citroen service history. Only been used in Dublin and spotless inside and out. I guess I am nervous about the reliability of the car based on the myriad of problems some owners seem to encounter. Yet, however, there would seem to be many very satisfied owners with trouble free C5s, so I don't quite know! The person off whom I bought the car told me he never has had a problem with it and, in fairness, it looks as new. Just a few points that I am wondering about and which perhaps other more seasoned Citroenistas may be able to advise! 1. The clutch. From a stop, at biting point, there seems to be a bit of drag - hard to explain - but it's not a clean bite/pickup and I generally have to apply a bit of extra throttle to get the car to move off cleanly. Is this typical of the car or an indication that the clutch is worn? There is no slip or any other problem with it - weight of pedal, etc, feels fine. Does the clutch in this car require fluid or fluid changes? 2. Gearchange - it doesn't feel very precise. 1st seems a long way over and I keep mistaking 3rd for 1st! 3. The suspension is very comfortable and almost 'floaty' when driving above 40mph but around town it feels quite hard - is this normal for the hydractive suspension? Also, it seems to generate a fair bit of road noise on certain surfaces - it's running on Michelin Pilot 15/205s - standard wheel and has just the standard hydrative. 4. The oil is exactly at the max niche on the dip stick yet the dash level indicator flashes when I turn on the ignition. According to the handbook this means there is too much oil in the car. I trust the dipstick!. I notice that bits of the yellow plastic at the top of the dipstick break off each time it is removed! The yellow plastic is almost mushy! 5. The service indicator indicating 2,600 miles to the next service, yet the spanner is remaining visible when driving. Why is this? It's a lovely, comfortable car with lots of space and a great boot. The 1.8 isn't very quick but it's quite adequate and not bad on fuel - if a bit noisy. There are no rattles or squeaks from the trim - thankfully - and it feels quite well bolted together in spite of the poor build quality I have read about.
