Whoops - Disconnecting The Battery?

Hi all,

New here but I have a 2003 C5 (so first gen) which I'm keeping off the road for over a month. Unfortunately before reading up on anything I've already disconnected the battery completely to stop it going flat. Have I just opened up a huge can of worms? I popped on here to ask as I heard from another C5 owner that due to all the electronics disconnecting the battery can be a bad idea.

Can anybody confirm whether I've made a massive boo-boo? Looking in the owners manual it seems to just suggest re-connecting the battery and inserting the key and turning the ignition, then letting it re-sync and reset. Is there another procedure I need to follow that isn't documented in the standard manuals?

Thanks in advance B)

Hello

Welcome to the forum. I had a 2003 C5 HDI that I had to replace the head on I just disconected the battery. It took about a month due to lack of finances but when completed. I reconnected the battery turned to key to position 2 to prime the fuel system then turned of then started the car just had to reset the time and date and retune the radio. No other problems.

Ah that's good to hear, thanks for the info.

On the plus side whilst I wait to sell this car we now have another C5, 2006 estate and its perfect. Our old C5 has served us very well over the years :)

itl be fine just turn the side lights on to wake the ecu up instead of the ignition then give it a couple of mins for the imobiliser to sort itself out before you start it

In the manual it says to all ways fit the + as in the Positive lead on the battery first but thats the same for a lot of cars and i dont no its maybe to stop a suden serge of power

No mate, it is to do with safety. Fit the +ve lead first then if you accidently short your spanner down to earth nothing will happen, do this with the -ve already connected you stand a good chance of blowing up the battery and getting a face full of battery acid.

Disconnnect in the reverse order, take -ve lead off first

Take care when connecting batteries.

Yes your rite it stands to reason i suppose. When i was reading what you just said there it made me think back 20 years or so when i see a bloke get a face full of Acid from a Battery on a fork lift that he shorted with the wrong end of a jumper lead 24 volt as i remember. Made a hell of a bang. I no its not funny but i still chuckle because he was screaming in pain or shock and i fired a bucket of what would be a mixture of pigs blood and water sludge at his face. Bet he liked me. Hahaha i still have tears in my eyes thinking about it.
