Reverse Gear Slidy Bit In Gear Stick

Hi there,

The slidey bit that slides up the gear lever to allow engagement of reverse gear on my C5 2.0 diesel is randomly sticking in the up position. The result is that I end up selecting reverse instead of 1st. Tried spraying with wd40 etc with no real improvement.

Any one else had this problem I wonder?

Cheers

Yes, gear box works ok, as long as you think to push it down

Oh yes - sort this out before you ram a brick wall behind the car like we did. Just use the search facility to see my post from last summer, had no problems since. Basically you need to pull up really hard and straight on the gear knob (DO NOT TWIST IT) then do the silicone lubricant/ptfe lube. To use the search facility try words like reverse gear/stuck/collar etc.

Thanks for the info'. Tried all kinds of lube and actually made it worse! Now fixed by putting 2 o rings to act as a collar to stop the slidey bit going too far up the shaft, it still activates reverse but doesn't go so afr as to get to the tight spot where it was getting stuck.

Thanks again.

I just used a bit of fine sandpaper on the tight spot, the plastic molding seems to deform on the front (gear knob off)

Seems to be a very common problem....I also had it when I bought the car (2002 2.2 HDI SX) a few weeks ago :(

My fix was to take the inner spring out of an old, buggered thermostat I had laid around the garage (you know you have 'em too)

and cut this down, with a hacksaw, so that it gave me just the right amount of 'resistance'.

It fitted perfectly into the space inside the gear knob head, the collar on the gear shaft then pushes against this spring when

lifted to engage reverse....and snaps....very reassuringly....back down when disengaged.
