jhatter Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Hi, I was driving my C5 (52 reg, 2.0 HDi, 110bhp diesel, manual) and heard unusual, engine noise. I slowed from 65mph and pulled up. I could now hear the noise was very loud and sounded like a grinding coming from the engine. Also the power-steering was no longer working. I had a look under the bonnet and the visible belts were intact and in place. I had to be towed home. If I turn on the engine, the noise is still present and continuous. Quote
Randombloke Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Power steering or LDS reservoir full? Pulleys for auxiliary belts loose and touching something? Alternator bearings gone and belts slipping? Quote

I'd be having a close look at the crackshaft pulley, they can make a real racket when about to fail, this could also explain the loss of power steer, the inner and outer of the crankshaft pulley slips (check by marking through the two parts with a white out pen, start the car and look for movement. jhatter Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 Thanks for both of your suggestions as to what the problem could be. My local car mechanics are coming to have a look at it today, so I will let you know what they say. Quote
jhatter Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 The mechanic thought it was the steering bearings, but I will take it in today for a full diagnostic. Any ideas what's involved fixing the steering bearings. Quote
