Oxymoron Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Hi,My Berlingo suffers from smelly washer bottle syndrome!Although I use screen wash in the bottle and fill up with water regularly, the Blingo only has to be parked in the sun for a short time for there to be a putrid smell emanating from the washers  Anyone else have this problem?....What's the cure?Cheerz  Quote
DesdinovaUK2 Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Is it down to the screen wash? I've never used the stuff - absolutely hate it. Quote
DickieG Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Are you using 'Holts' brand screen wash? If so that smells like cats **SS or battery acid, absolutely dreadful stuff. When the cars at work were changed over to that a couple of years ago I thought there was a problem with the battery charging system!! Quote
wozza Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Get some nice screen wash its worth the money for the smell alone. And screen wash is good i tried with just water no matter what it could not get my screen as clear. Was worth putting up with the very alcoholic smell for those few minutes for a crystal clear screen. Quote
Joeblunt Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Yes I have used that Holts screen wash and as soon as I used it SWMBO claimed it smelt like a cat had climbed up in my engine bay and pee'd. you could add a little vinegar to clear water or buy a different brand screen wash.. The Holts one I had was Blue in colour. Quote
Oxymoron Posted May 14, 2006 Author Posted May 14, 2006 Hi,It isn't Holts screen wash but Carplan all season blue stuff which smells like meths and makes you momentarily high! I've tried the bottle without screenwash too and it's just the same.We had the same problem at about this time last year...as soon as it got warmer.Smells like bad eggs (sulphurous) and cat pi$$ mixed together! Cheerz. Quote
Oxymoron Posted May 14, 2006 Author Posted May 14, 2006 Hi,On a different note...I changed the wiper blades for Bosch ones from Halfrauds, which although they look the same as the Citroen originals, don't seem to perform nearly as well.Cheerz. Quote
Joeblunt Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Does your Berlingo have Air con? If so that could be giving off a stagnant type of smell. Quote
Oxymoron Posted May 14, 2006 Author Posted May 14, 2006 Does your Berlingo have Air con? If so that could be giving off a stagnant type of smell. Hi,It's not coming from the air con, as that's fine...It's definitely the washer reservoir!I may just have to see if I can remove the bottle from the wing area and give it a good disinfecting!Cheerz. Quote
Joeblunt Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 If you get the bottle off you could clean the inside with bleach then give it some antibacterial spray, Air Con sometimes smells and spraying an antibacterial spray on the pollen filter and in the pollen filter housing seems to cure it. Quote
wozza Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Also helps if you use your aircon regularly i know a lot of people dont use it during the cooler months etc. But thats the best way to break it and cause the smell etc. And i dunno when i had just plain water in my bottle the screen dirtied up straight away after i washed it and it dried a little i got smear marks everywhere. Oxymoron Posted May 15, 2006 Author Posted May 15, 2006 Hi,I usually use the aircon once a week in the winter to keep it fresh! It's useful for demisting quickly in damp weather anyway.Cheerz. Quote
Terry1100 Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 Our aircon is on permanently (it makes little difference to the fuel consumption - not like my old Series 1 XJ6 but that's another story). That may have something to do with the fact that the fan switch broke today - it's on all the time and won't switch off. :o In a bizarre quirk of fate, my C2 airocn packed up today as well - the light's on but no action from the compressor ! Just to stay on topic, no untoward smells from our washer bottle ;) Quote
Alec Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 How about dropping a couple of sterilizing tablets used for sterilizing babies bottle etc into the washer bottle? Just an idea I can't guarantee it'll work. Quote
oofmeister Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Some things are plainly 'lingo staples; our 05 suffers from exactly the same bad-eggy problem. I've emptied the contents out and refilled with fresh fluid, (clear, but nicely scented...), and will report back on the results - ok so far though. I had wondered if the car being little-used for a month or so prior to purchase was responsible? Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Had a similar problem on my last Xantia. No bad eggs though. Mine smelt of Tom Cats! Not Nice. I emptied it out and refilled it with a dilute mix of Bleach and lemon flash which I pumped through and left overnight. It fetched so much crap out of the bottle it blocked the jets when I started pumping it through next day. I removed the jets, pumped it all out and flushed through with clean water. I cleared and replaced the jets and it was still fine 3 years later when I sold the car on. Cheers, Hope this helps. <_< Quote
