The Air Con on my 1999 Xsara 2.0 HDi (90) LX doesn't appear to be working. When I press the Air Con Button the light comes on, but the air is not cooled. On previous cars that I have had, when the AirCon is activated you can here the engine tone change as it kicks in, but this isn't happening in the Xsara. Does anyone know what could be the cause of the problem ? I had it regassed just before the winter, because I didn't think it was working when I bought the car then, but I didn't have a good chance to test it until now.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers.

I had this problem on my 51 plate Xsara SX Hdi and what pissed me off was it was not noticed in the PDI and it took three fixes to sort it out.

It was 2 years old and did about 44,000 miles.

They regassed it twice then finally they had to replace a circuit board that controls the air conditioning.

Check this.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like an expensive job to me !

You say the ligh comes on when you press the switch, and i assume the compressor doesnt clunk into life several seconds later.

The ussual fault with air conditioning is lack of gas. Unfortunately theres no eas way of checking this without spending money.......and theres always the possibility that a component or seal has a leak which wont be noted untill they go through the gas recovery process....this can add to costs.

Halfords do an airconditioning top up kit with pressure gauge.......See here

Might be worth topping up to see if its just below the pressure threshold limit, if you can read, know how to do tyre pressure and your not colour blind it should be within the ability of most people to do.

Now that the car is out of warranty, sounds like it might be but best get it fixed as leaving it could land even dearer repairs.

Hopefully KFK's advice will sort you out.

By the way the green A/C always came on even if there was no cooling effect. SOmetimes you could hear the characteristic clunk of the compressor and sometimes you didnt.

Thankfully the replacment of this circuit board sorted it out.

If it is this, you might be looking at a bill of around £250. Keep us posted.

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and am also having issues with Aircon not working.

Does anyone know if this is covered under 3yr warranty?

replies much appreciated!

3 year warranty doesnt cover the cost of regassing an airconditioning system where a leak isnt present, should also be borne in mind that its a recommendation that the airconditioning be regassed at 2 years old as an additional service requirement.

Should the vehicle have an electronic defect or a leak whereby a part requires replacement its highly likely it will be covered.

Best thing is to book in to have it inspected, if its over 2 years old and hasnt been regassed i suggest you ask what the current price is so you dont get a suprise later.

My Xsara has Aircon/Climate but even if the A/C switch is off if I turn the blower fan in any setting the compresser clicks on no matter what the temp setting, is this normal? :D

Hi,

if your aircon is not working does the electric fan cut in when hot?
