kfk Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 What colour is the plug on the end??? Blue or Pink No idea the picture i had was black and white.......but blue sounds good, never seen a pink one round the back of a radio Quote
Mike5483 Posted May 31, 2006 Author Posted May 31, 2006 Well the reason im asking is that there are 2 leads on Ebay at the mo, 1 is a small blue plug (2 x 3pins) with a 3.5mm jack plug on the end. The other is a larger pink plug, with a 3.5mm jack plug on the end. They both say the are for an auxiliary input and both only have three cables coming out. Just wondered which one of these might be worth investigating furthur. I must admit, I was erring on the side of the blue one. Quote
kfk Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I dont konw how much they are on ebay but the Citroen lead is £21.51 inc vat. Surely it would be better to get your dealer to order it, program your set, amd know it should all awork......not order something that may not work. Quote
citroeneddie Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Kfk is absolutely right - worth paying a bit more for warrantied work that will work first time. B) Quote

wozza Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Just dont get them to fit it. wire coathanger push into holes at side of radio pull radio out put wire in its a 30 second job. Quote
kfk Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Kfk is absolutely right - worth paying a bit more for warrantied work that will work first time. :P Depends how much the dealer charges for fitting Chances are including the update of the radio setting slightly less than the cost of an ipod.......was that expensive? At the end of the day its your choice......do you want to create problems with your £12,000 + car for the sake of a £20 lead and some labour. Do it properly or not at all! Quote
wozza Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 You cant exactly plug it in wrong though can you? And ipods go for the better part of £300. Its a car radio your plugging basically a 3.5mm jack into a port on the rear of the stereo it cant really go wrong. As its isolated from the rest of the wiring. Quote
kfk Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 You cant exactly plug it in wrong though can you? What colour is the plug on the end??? Blue or Pink From a different thread Only for Citroen RD4 - Ipod Lead/Auxiliary input. Part number for lead - 9706AG The radio has to be configured by your dealer to turn the Auxiliary input on. They do this by changing a setting in the RD4 unit to Classic Mode (conventional). If the lead doesnt work make sure the connector is wired as follows: Black wire terminal 11Red wire terminal 10White wire terminal 4. If you want the job done go and ask them how much.....i would think £100 will see the job done (including the parts)........and if you leave them with the ipod they will check it works too before you collect it. Personally i think the most you will save is on the cost of the lead.....that may be incorrect! Quote
Mike5483 Posted May 31, 2006 Author Posted May 31, 2006 Yeah, im just looking at the options. The leads on Ebay are as follows: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 I can fit the lead myself, Im not afraid to attack the radio, Ive fitted quite a few in my time to various cars and already have the stereo pullers that came with an old Blaupunkt radio I had in my Rover. The problem I have is that Ive asked the dealer how much it would be to activate the port and they want £30, which TBH, I think is absolutely disgusting for the amount of work involved. I might be wrong on this... Im connecting it to a Sony MP3 player, the new one with the screen under the casing. Im quite confident in my abilities to do the fitting, and many others have done it. I just have to get the thing enabled properly. Quote
Mike5483 Posted May 31, 2006 Author Posted May 31, 2006 Right, just been and done a bit of investigating and niether of the leads will fit. The pink one has 10 Pins, the blue has 9 and and the Citroen/Peugeot lead has 12 and is of a different shape, the plug itself is black. Thanks for all the help, info and thoughts though guys, much appreciated. Quote

I might be wrong on this... I dont think half hours labour is unreasonable, especially as it will probably take the technician longer than that to do it......if he's never done one before. Just out of interest......what do you think is a reasonable price, what would you be happy to pay? Quote
citroeneddie Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 KFK My Dealer charges £65 plus VAT per hour, but as I am a good customer I get a reduction. I don't begrudge people making a living, and there are overheads etc, but I think that is pretty steep for any profession. I'm not trying to be controversial, just debating the issue. What do you think? Quote
wozza Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 it took my local audio place ovr an hour to make sure my headunit was gonna go in without causing any errors with the mutliplex system they wouldnt sell the headunit to me unless they knew it would work so they fitted it which took them around an hour to get it sorted properly. And left the car in the workshop running for an hour with the stereo going to make sure and they charged me £20 which included my 12 months warranty with them to do that i dont think that was a lot of money. And i was fine with paying that but for citroen to do it at there stupid prices sod that. Quote
kfk Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I wonder how much money they were making on the head unit? Quote
wozza Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Got money knocked off it so not as much as they shoulda been either way there was no where else I could get the headunit for less than £280 and its Alpine flagship unit so not really complaining about that bit. I dont think thats a lot of money to pay for one of the best units on the market and £20 to fit it. On good terms with the owners etc managed to get most of my stuff from them at a discount my new front speakers were 1/2 the price they were on the shelf for. Only thing i had to pay full price for was my bass amp but i also had to wait it on arriving from the states. Quote
Mike5483 Posted June 1, 2006 Author Posted June 1, 2006 How much would I like to pay for this work to be done... I dont know, at a push id pay £20 (ideally about £15). I know its not much different but psychologically it makes a world of difference. I know its probably not as simple as I think it is, but its not exactly a difficult manual task is it, the guy aint gonna get skinned knuckles over it is he!!! Quote
kfk Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 OK.....So now you've covered the technicians hourly rate, how much are you prepared to pay towards his training, the telephones (i assume you will ring to book in), the phone call for us to tell you its ready, the car cleaner because have have to pay him too, Water rates and electricity, insurance for whilst we work on your vehicle, a proportion of the rent on the property............i could carry on with this list. What you have to realise is we are here to make money, it may seem were ripping you off, but the overheads of a dealership with service parts and sales are massive compared to a service department alone. So, i dont see a problem charging £30......we need profit to survive.....as does any business Quote
wozza Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 See not once have i picked my car up from citroen and its been washed. Last time it came back absolutely full of dust from the shop. Quote

So, i dont see a problem charging £30......we need profit to survive.....as does any business What, so £15 equates to a Citroen technicians hourly rate!!! Blimey, Im in the wrong trade!!! Wish I was on £30 an hour. Thats gotta be wrong. I would say £15 would easily cover a technicians hourly rate with enough left over to pay for at least a few of those other things. I mean, for god sake, I get about £12 per hour as an electrician where I work and we have to pay for more water and electricity then any dealership could ever throw a stick at (I work in a papermill). And, whenever my car has been at the dealership, it has never been cleaned. Besides, this goes against what Iw as saying anyway. I cant odds what the dealer charges. The point is, I dont like it and begrudge paying £30 for (at most) half hours work. Justify it all you like (I dont need you to, I can do that for myself), but it wont change my mind, it is a lot of money for the work involved. Quote
lab44 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 £20 sounds like a good deal for an hours work. I would obviously expect to pay more at a dealership. However I also think some dealers try to rip you off (for example £20 for 5 minutes work is a bit excessive) + between them and citroen there is already massive overcharging for the parts. I can see both sides of it - my dad used to be a mechanic and he was saying the number of doctors and lawyers who came in complaining he was charging them £80 to repair his car but then again go and see the lawyer and see if he would be willing to represent you in court for an afternoon for £80. And when on the subject of high charges we recently sold our house and the estate agent took around £4000 in "commission" which basically involved printing out a few details and sticking them in the local newspaper. Still if you can do the job yourself or get an independant to do it cheaper then go for it :P Quote
Mike5483 Posted June 1, 2006 Author Posted June 1, 2006 Thats one of the things that bugs me, you cant do it yourself. They've got you over a barrel and they shaft you for the privledge!!! They're all the same, not just Citroen. And as for Lawyers and Estate Agents, dont get me started!!! Quote
kfk Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 To be honest, i've lost interest in this topic now...........thanks to to those that took the trouble to thank me for the information.......those that didnt and just whinged on about dealer prices.......well you've got what you wanted to know, how you use the information is up to you.....i wish you luck.
