vts180 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 My vts is burning oil after 2000 miles of owning it. I bought it used with 18000miles on the clock. I had to top it up with 1 litre of oil. :D Is this a common issue with the C4 vts burning oil? Quote
Mike5483 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Id say it shouldnt use oil like that. I am very sceptical about these extended service intervals that all manufacturers seem to be adopting. I mean, 20000 miles before the first oil change is along time to have swarf and constantly degrading oil in a new engine for. Id get it booked in to your dealer and aks them to look at it. Quote
vts180 Posted June 18, 2006 Author Posted June 18, 2006 I thought it was strange. But no again! - I've already had it in the garage for electrical problems. How would they identify its burning oil? Quote
Mike5483 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 If it is burning oil, it should be possible to see blue smoke emitting from the exhaust. I think they can do gas analysis tests etc. Quote

According to your figures your consuming half a litre in 1000 miles......sounds good to me. Oil consumption will vary according to how a vehicle is driven & how often it is checked, the less in it the hotter it gets the quicker it burns. I would top it up to the correct upper mark on the dipstick and then run the vehicle for 1000 miles to establish the rate its using it. While doing this check the oil regularly to establish that it isnt getting near the minimum mark. If you come up with less than 1litre in 1000 miles its ok.....nothing to wory about. Quote
Mike5483 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Thats a good point, was it full up to the max. mark when you bought it??? Quote
barns Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 got a mate that works for castrol, and i had this conversation with him over engine oil and the 20k oil change before, and he said that modern oils be it synthetic or semi don't break down like old oils and infact would last alot longer than the 20k the problems are caused by the filters clogging thats why they say change the lot at 20k..... Quote
Mike5483 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 I can see that working if as you say, the filters last the distance. But on the first fill, there is gonna be loads of swarf and particles in the oil. I reckon it should be an oil change at 8000 or so, then the extended service intervals. TBH though, i dont like the idea. Im sure the engine would last a lot longer if the oil was changed every 10000 miles like it used to be. Quote
Rob555 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 My 1.6 hdi used about 1/2 a litre of oil in the first 5000 miles it is now on 10000 miles and it has not used anymore .I was speaking to a truck driver the other day and his truck uses synthetic oil and only needs an oil change at 100000kms Quote
vts180 Posted June 18, 2006 Author Posted June 18, 2006 Thanks everyone for replying. it was the surprise of the oil warning message coming on after 2000miles of buying it. I just never thought of checking that early of buying , but if you all generally saying its normal then fair enough. Quote
ham's c4vts Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 best have regular oil changes, oils and filters are cheap, engine expensive Quote
wozza Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 The first oil change at 1000-1500 mile hsould get rid of a lot of the new crap from the engine anyways and its a free service. In fact its free and needs to be done to allow the warranty to be allowed. Then its every 20k after that or I think 12k for diesels. Or 2 years which ever comes first. But if you want it changed earlier you can either do it yourself half way between the service or citroen will do it for £40 or so. THink it was £43 at my local dealership as theres a big price list on the wall for just oil changes. Quote

If you want it done your dealer would be able to quote you for it though. Quote
hertsnminds Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 At least we don't have to check the oil every week, like Mazda RX8 owners with a recommended oil check every 500 miles. IanBlack 55 VTR+ Quote

bill03 Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 My bike revs to 10k+, (inline four), and hardly uses any oil. :D Quote
Stuey Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 I would say that the cars engine is much bigger but the RX8 only has 1300cc and I geuss your bike is an 1100?? Quote
wozza Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Rotarty engines are known for using stupid amounts of oil and fuel. red line on an RX8 though depending on version is either 7500 or 9000. But rotarty engines arent something you buy if you want something that will last. Engine needs rebuilt every 50,000 miles or so usually or it did on the RX7. Quote
