You need a first rate tool kit for a start and some mechanical expertise. Haynes give it three spanners. First the hub nut need to come off. Some cars have the nut staked others have a R-clip. Either way it needs removing. From memory you need a 32mm socket with a very long extension bar. They will be tight, having been torqued up to around 230lbs.ft. Better to loosen the nut before jacking the car. Also use stands. Drain the gearbox. Take off the nut then withdraw the clamp bolt from the swivel hub. Open up the gap on the swivel hub with a small chisel. Push the lower suspension arm down far enough to release the shank from the hub. Pull the hub assembly outwards to free the CV joint from the hub. The driveshaft can then be withdrawn from the gearbox. Fit a new oil seal. If you remove the drivers side shaft, the L-bolts also need removing from the intermediate bearing.

Hi JohnDouglas

You helped me out on the size of the nut that holds the drive shaft to the hub. Thanks for that. Got the driveshaft (driver's side) free of the hub. I'll have a look for the L bolts. Do you need to remove them (or just turn them 90 degrees)? When done, will the drive shaft pull out by hand or do you need to drift it out?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks so far for getting back to us on your progress.   No need to remove the offset bolts.   Just loosen and turn them clear of the outer bearing race.   Very rarely will the shaft just pull out.   The intermediate bearing often needs help.
