AHHH... I do love country roads, and do drive the car how its ment to be driven (i.e Quite hard), and latley have had the Air Con on at 3 out of 4 and at the coldest setting, but 27.2!!!!! B) That is nearly as bad as my Dad's 3 litre Jag!!

Could this dramatic loss of MPG be down to the Air Con :D ??

Thanks

Not really probably down to your driving more to be honest. My aircon barely makes any difference in my miles per gallon readout. How you drive will be the biggest cause of it. If your getting close to the redline through most of the gears its gonna kill your fuel accelrating hard in my 1.6 i have seen the readout show as low as 9mpg.

Yet when i drive it very economically i can get around 33mpg have had it read 45mpg after a 12 mile trip but was no traffic and i didnt hit any lights and just cruised at 30 in 5th.

Since your a new driver though im putting my money on not used to the car properly yet and possibly a little left foot heavy and not making full use of the gearbox. Know my friend was like that when he passed would go through fuel so quickly got in the car with him one day and the way he used the gears the speed he was travelling at still accelrating to red lights etc not surprising he went through fuel.

Best tip i can give you is use the higher gears when you can and try never to stop try judging things in the distance so you dont have to slow down much that way keeping your speed up so dont have to waste fuel on accelerating and you will see MPG improvements due to less stopping as well.

Aircon makes a small dent but not enough to drop a 1.4 down to 27mpg.

The air conditioning will be turned on and off dependent on engine load.

I.E. if you want to overtake going up hill and need to hit the accelerator hard the aircon will shut off to give maximum power from the engine.

When you say "heavy left foot" was that a mistake or you mean too much clutch???

At 30 im in 4th, at 40 im in 5th.

I had a mate in the car all day today (just got back) Drove like an angel, and it is still at 28 MPG.

Im not crazy on the roads, do like accelerating, and driving on country roads, but my driving has'nt changed in the last week, before i was getting 33MPG( At worst!).

The only thing that has changed is me having the air con on a high setting, but my mind will refuse to belive that i could dent the MPG that much!

My parents say that it could, but for some reason my head just cant get around it!

Come to think about it there are alot of traffic works on a daily drive, and the lights are VERY long

Any way, WAY too late, well early!

Are you filling your fuel tank to the rim most of the time? Well my brothers C3 is doing around 25.9mpg 90% of the time so I mentioned this to the dealer as mine does between 35 - 40mpg most of the time and 50mpg on long runs. The dealer said when you fill your car up with fuel do you fill it to the rim? I said yes. Does your brother? I said no he's putting in £10 in every other day. He saids thats your problem. The mpg en't so good when just putting either £5 or £10 in at a time something to do with reseting can't remember all what he said so I put £25 in for my brother on Monday and the mpg has been showing 34mpg which is first time ever and it has lasted him longer aswell.

meant right foot i too am suffering from a serious lack of sleep this past week or so. Not gonna be helped by the fact i have my mates stag do this weekend. Although the cure for that is keep drinking even when you wake up! Got someone driving me around all week / weekend so im good i dont need to drive for once.

Hey wozza while I was at the dealers hey had a Wicked Red C4 VTR+ Coupe in the showroom so I sat in it you made a great choice mate. I liked it. only if they did it in Automatic never mind.

They will do soon mate got a new semi autobox like the sensodrive thats been added to it in the VTR ranges i think.

So can get one of those next time think they come in the 1.6 as well if i remember correctly.

Thats good I would like another Sensodrive than a fully Automatic. If it had VTR+ spec great if it is the same as SX and the currunt VTR I don't know as I like my Auto lights and Auto Wipers. Will have to wait and see

been usin air con on full wack also, does reduce mpg by a fair bit but it also drains the cars power by a shed load whats it like on the 1.4 ?

I did only fill it up with £15 once a couple days ago. First time i have done that. I usually end up filling it up full.

It is slowly going up though (a bit too slow for me though!)

See I have not noticed much in way of power loss at all on the 1.6 I have.

And my mpg doesnt seem drastically different with it on or off. long 100 mile drive done it with it on and off got about a 2mpg difference nothing major and that could be just slightly different speeds etc.

Cars in this weather will feel a little slower though due to lack of cool dense air getting into the engine.

1.6 is smallest unit i've had for some time just feels that when air conditioning is slapped up car feels flat in pick up hence foot to bottom.

With the hotter weather at the moment  all cars fitted with A/C behave in this manner, my old Foci used to have this characteristic (as well as many others), as did other hire cars I have driven for work. Its just where he A/C is working hard to keep you cool.

Normally the A/C would decide to kick in just as I need to pull quickly away from a roundabout or junction, leaving you with a "massive dead spot" and a car coming at you leaving you semi-stranded in its path.

You'd then hear the "click" of the A/C clutch and it would then behave normally until the clutch kicked in again. In hot weather the engine always seemed especially "wheezy" although not drinking much in the way of fuel.

I must admit the C4 is the first car I've driven where the AC has minimal intrusion into the driving characteristics of the car, not enough for me to say it has much effect on the performance.

I'd put it down to normal behaviour of A/C.

I am sure you wouldn't have to wait long for the weather to cool suffciently enough for it to sort itself out after all this is the UK.

Just need to remember to keep the A/C running in the cooler months! :P

Press and hold the button on the end of the stalk for which ever thing you want to reset.

Thats the button on the end of the wiper stalk to reset the trip computer.

Short presses of this cycles between real time consumption reading, Trip 1 and Trip 2. Long press resets.

The use of Trips is described in the manual as

Trip 1 - reset everyweek for weekly readouts

Trip 2- reset every month for monthy readouts
