Hello, I'd like to buy a used Citroen Diesel. I've owened a petrol BX in the past and was wonderful.

I am thinking about the Xantia 1.9TD since I've heard that the engine is more reliable than the HDi but few people are telling me that does 30-35Mpg where the BX with the same engine does 50-55Mpg.

Shall I go for the Xantia 1.9Diesel without the turbo? Is the 1.9TurboD Xantia's engine different than the BX's or the Xantia needs more fuel because of its weight?

Shall I consider the Xantia HDi? How reliable is the engine?

Thank You.

Lets talk about the 1.9 diesels first.

The normally aspirated and turbocharged engines were introduced in 1993 with 1905cc. Noth were indirect injection diesels.

THe unblown unit developed 71bhp and 90lb/ft and the blown version (had a turbo AND intercooler) 92bhp and anythign between 144-148lb/ft which in them days was outstanding for a diesel but was not particularly fuel efficient.

I had a 306 D Turbo and only managed 40-45mpg.

The TURBO Diesel BX never had the above TD engine. That had a turbocharged 1.8 litre engine. The normally aspirated BX had the above normally aspirated diesel. How confusing!!!!!

Back to the 1.9s

Owners with the normally aspirated diesel say its more fuel efficient and the performance difference is not a handicap. On paper its more economic than the Turbo.

The HDi engine is a much more advanced engine than the previous two. Introduced in 2000 it was a 2 litre unit with a turbo only producing 90bhp and 155lb/ft. This was one of the first engines that had common rail technology which is a direct injection process that injects fuel at much higher pressures. This increase performance, optimised economy and emissions and reduced noise.

If finances are tight go for the non aspirated diesel but you'd kick yourself if you don't try the HDi version.

Thank you for the commet.

Are you sure the 1.9TD on the xantia is different that the 1.9TD on the BX? There has never been a 1.8TD for the BX, there were 1.7D, 1.9D and 1.9TD.

BX's were nearly always 1.7 capacity, either turbo charged or atmo. At the end of their run they produced a few with the 1.9 engine.

You ask should you go for a turbo or atmo. The atmo's are rather sluggish and if you like a bit of performance, go for the turbo engine. The atmo engine was alright in the BX and Pug 205, but the Xantia is a heavier car, so I would imagine performance would be disappointing. The HDI is a much more sophisticated engine than the XUD, with lots of sensors to control the performance, so if you like the simple life with little to go wrong, get the XUD, preferably the 2.1, if you can find a good one. Also, if you like getting your hands dirty, you'll find the XUD easier to maintain.

Ok, got it! I'll go for the Xantia HDi! Do the 110CV and 90CV have the same tire size? I know the 110CV comes with 205/50 R16, does the 90CV come with the same tires?

You have an HDi as well.... any problem with it?

Thank You.

I don't know for sure, but I'd think the 110 and the 90 would have different tyres. I suppose you know that the 110 has an intercooler and the 90 doesn't - and it shows!
