Its quite possible its tappetts.

Id check your oil level, it may be low and then change the oil and filter.

TBH though, if you are worried get it back to the dealer. All the time it has warrenty, get them to do it.

my old Rover 214 used to sound like a tractor when first started. A great engine though once up to temperature, the Citreon engine cant compare in terms of noise and character of the K series. Brilliant engine.

having had experiance with the 1.4 8 valve engine which is almost the same as the new 1.4 16 valve, the tappets used to get noisey after a while, its just the gaps have gone bigger and being alloy it sounds worse

It could be the injectors rather than the tappets you are hearing when cold.

The injectors pulse more often when cold to get more fuel in for cold start.

Time consuming job adjusting the tappets/valve clearances took about 4.5 hours on my bmw as a number required shimming and set me back about £350

On the M3 Evo engine they are solid lifters so take a little longer to adust.

Had my injectors off too and had them flushed and flow tested - £200ish + VAT.

The joys of performance cars.

The tappets on the C4 petrol and diesel are the automatic hydraulic adjusting type. if there is a noise on starting up it will be a question that the tappet seals are letting the oil out over a day or so. This is due to faulty seals within the automatic tappet :P ;) and can be rectified by changing the automatic tappets for new ones. If the car is under warranty this is ok but if not you have the choice of puting up with the noise on start up or getting the repair done. I would point out that the loud tapping on start up can eventually cause camshaft and tappet follower damage.
