WillR Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 (edited) After 12 years of extremely contented ownership - I can honestly say this has been the best car I have EVER owned  - my beloved C5 is retiring. It has taken me and the wife and various friends to the South of France and back more than ten times with never a murmur - ever. The gearbox threw a tantrum in the Alps once, about 8 years ago, but 50 miles of slow driving fixed it, with no repeat to date. Before I send it to the great scrapyard in the sky (round the corner and up the road a bit, actually), does anyone want it for spares, in exchange for about £300-£500?It has covered 170,000 almost fault-free miles, and is fully roadworthy. It still does 45mpg tank to tank on a trip and 38-40mpg around town (in summer only - winter takes 5mpg off that). It has a superchips ECU mod (136 to 172 bhp) which made it SOooo much better to drive than in original specification. That is/was worth £500 by itself. It changed the car completely into a C5 that has done EXACTLY what it says on the tin for the last 120000 miles. Known faults / repairs required:Tiptronic shift needs attention (electronic problem possibly) - Auto function perfect.New spheres finally needed (170K... That is phenominal when I compare it to my old Xantia [60k] and XM...!! [40k])12/16V Swirl valve function is blocked by electronic function - all vacuum hoses recently repaired and functioning.EOLYS pump system needs some TLC. It only works every now and then. NO faults with particle filter. The door deadlocks stick intermittently at random (never more than one at a time), requiring unlock action from inside. Lubrication every 6-9 months fixes it.NO DENTS - plenty of small scratches, courtesy of old age.Spare radio and many other bits. I have replaced it - reluctantly - with a NEW C4 Grand Picasso 2.0 Blue HDI Auto, which cost me over £10k more than the C5, and isn't a patch on it. I will very possibly cry when my C5 disappears from my sight for the last time. :( Edited April 23, 2014 by WillR Quote
Johndouglas Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 I will very possibly cry when my C5 disappears from my sight for the last time. :(I know just how you feel. I felt the same when I parted company with my C5 last week. Very much the same as if I were leaving my poor old pet with the vet. Quote
