Hi there, I'm Leo. Usually frequent the TalkAudio.co.uk forum, but I'm in need of some more specialist knowledge on the C4 than is on offer there - hope you will accomidate me :P

1) I have an SX model C4, with the standard CD headunit (not the JBL upgrade or owt like that). I'd like to relocate this unit somewhere when upgrading my audio system so I don't use the different functions the deck offers. Are the cables coming out of the unit simple copper cables that can easily be extended, or as the C4 operates a CANBUS system iirc are there any optical/digital cables I should be aware of?

2) If I cannot (or of course choose not to) relocate the stock HU based on the previous question, it looks like I'm going to have to crack open the fibreglass and get custom. I've seen that higher spec C4s have a SatNav display in the seperate centre panel of the dash below the vents. Would there be enough room behind this panel to replace my current cubbyhole flappy thing with a headunit, or is there all kinds of nasties lurking just behind? For reference, the HU is about 16cm (6 1/2 inches) deep.

3) Another location I though of is just above the rev counter. As my headunit is operated fully by (wired and wireless) remote control, with the actual in-dash bit just being a HU-sized display, as long as I can see it it doesn't have to be easily accessable by hand. However I feel that theres going to be all kind of nasties lurking around the steering wheel, so unless someone advises me otherwise it's a path I'd rather avoid

Right, think thats about it for now B)

Leo.

Edit: Thought of a forth one:

Can I turn off Economy Mode at all? As I'm thinking about competing in Car Audio competitions, which must have the engine off, so the last thing I need is the C4 putting it's oar in every five seconds or so

Welcome to the forums mate im over on TA as well but dont really post very much only on there as im looking for a cheap XXX 12 when i finally have some money again.

Im not sure if the economy mode can be disabled or not it should be possible but just depends if you play the music for longer than 30 minutes without starting the car up. I know there were some people on another forum that went under a while ago saying there economy mode kicked in after literally 10 seconds. So possible it could be changed somehow.

You could mount the strereo in the dash dont see it being much of an issue really my crossovers are in the dash and theres quite a bit of room behind there.

However there may be another possibility the higher end C4 omdels have all the stereo functionality on the steering wheel taking up a few extra buttons could be possible to get those buttons from citroen and retro fit it. that way you dont need the standard stereo at all. I have lost no functionality can still change my mpg display etc.

Is your audible reverse warning still working ?

Most of us that tried another stereo lost the warning sound in the speakers.

I have a penis, and can therefore reverse a car without needing sensors :P

Now i've heard of the Gnats tadger.......but isnt the hamsters penis taking it a bit far!

Still i spose knocking the end of it would make your eyes water so its as good a measuring stick as any

1, There are no digital/optical connectors

2, I've no idea

3, There are no nasties around the steering wheel area......but dont remove the steering wheel as you will never get the gears back in synch with each other.

4, No you cant turn off or alter the length of the economy mode.

so if I went to the dealership to have a VTS steering wheel fitted they would get pissed off then??

*VTS steering wheel added to shopping list*

No.......we wouldnt, weve got a tool to lock it in place........i just hate having to tell snivelling customers that they've broken it and its not my fault they took it apart.

Nice one mate, cheers :P

Looks like I'll be moving the stock unit then. Should be fun.

Should I post pics when I'm done, or would nobody be interested?

We like pics here. Anytime you wanna post some pics...post em up!

And KFK could he not fit the same steering wheel controls as we have on the VTR+ to his SX so that he would not need the standard unit at all?

I would definatly be interested, you are the first person who is thinking about any serious mods to the C4, most of us have looked at changing wheels and swapping stock speakers but nothing as major as what you are talking about...

Work has already started, I'll see if I can some that are already up.

It's a tad messy atm. One of our goals was to make sure the spare was still accessable - not an easy task. I'll expand more on the work when I get the pics :P

@wozza: The stock unit is only a temporary fix at best, so I'm not too fussed about keeping it in there tucked away - the Sony XES kit I'm using does have it's own tuner block, but it's a seperate bit of kit that is proving to be a tad hard to find. However theres a chap in the States atm working on a DAB module, so hopefully that'll be working this time next year

Edit: Heres some pics that were put up on the SESQ forum. there not much cop, but it's better than nowt. Clicky

Work resumes next week

we havent got round to doing anything like that yet. We met a few weeks ago in Manchester and we discussed meeting at Alton Towers next time. Not sure if it will be before they close for the winter...
