danbakery Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Hi all, One more issue with the Xsara, handbrake cable snapped on my way back from work the other day. I have brought the new cable, rear drum nut, and cap. Question being how hard is this job? Remove centre console and take off drums then it all connects in? Looking at the cable I brought I assume it goes directly from each drum independantly then onto the handbrake? Any advise or a guide would be greatly appreciated, don't have a Haynes manual so a bit of insight would be good. Quote
Johndouglas Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Replacing a handbrake cable isn't too difficult providing you have some decent tools. Before you remove the wheel or jack up the car, remove the dust cover from the drum. You'll need a socket of the correct size (32mm rings a bell) for the hub nut and some serious leverage to get it loosened. Get it loose before you jack up. The nut will be peened into a groove so it needs to be tapped out first. Remove the centre console and disconnect the cable from the equalizing bar. With the hub nut off, jack up the car and remove the wheel and the brake drum. Make a note of where the cable is attached to the car (held with three clips) and route the new cable along the same route. To disconnect the cable from the brake shoes it will be necessary to loosen them from the back plate, but as far as I remember there's no need to remove completely - unless they are worn/greasy or damaged, in which case it's worth doing at the same time. danbakery Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Thanks mate, doesn't seem too bad in general compared to some. Will update once the weekend is over. Quote
