1999 Xantia, automatic gearbox drops unexpectedly out of 5th gear into 3rd apparently.

Any idea what could cause this and what I should recommend?

When a auto box drops to 3rd its like a limp home mode setting . You need to get the box plugged in or taken to a autobox specialist
