;) Dear All,

My car is a 2002 2.2 HDi SX, now done 124K. Recently i noticed a loud knocking/rattling sound from the engine area when idling. Thought it was a stuck tappet at first. Took it to the "main stealer" where the crankshaft pulley was diagnosed as breaking up. (The noise was actually only heard from the RH side of the car ,ie when parking with the drivers side window open, and not when looking under the bonnet). The pulley drives the belt for the alternator etc, not the cam belt, and is rubber damped to withstand the high torque from these HDi engines. Apparently it is a common occurence at this sort of mileage.

It is best to get it changed before you do too many miles. I was quoted £291 to do the job which included the pulley at £157 +VAT. An independent is carrying out the work next week for only £110 as the pulley is only £46 from the likes of GSF or Eurocar parts.

cheap ain't always best, supposedly had belt, pulley & all tensioners done @ 100k 18 months ago. 33k later, just about limped home tue night, alternator not charging , no p/steering, burning rubber & noises like a tank on steel tracks whilst driving.found piece of metal wrapped around suspension mount that looks suspiciously like one edge of crank pulley and i suspect that either alternator, p/ steering pump or air con compressor has seized

work wasn't done at main stealer but parts were 'supposedly' citroen, hmmmm...

looks like a bleak xmas, alternator 200+,power pump 100+? can get new compressor for around 300 luckily but still gonna add up!

will let you know results after car goes in tue to my new garage who have done 2 services for me so far

well...guess what? yup 4th pulley now on car!

noisy like kids putting lollipop sticks in bike wheels, few days later.. quiet

turns out when they go quiet they're not 'fixed', mine locked up with no damping. not very good for aircon clutch

also when idling in eco heating mode, every now & again would judder as if aircon trying to kick in

DO NOT IGNORE ANY SYMPTOMS SIMILAR TO THESE, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!

Read all the replies on crankshaft pullies, does this apply to all HDI's? My story: Have a 52 plate C5 110 HDI that only done 52000. A few months ago i got a rattle from the belt area on tickover and especially when cold. Had air-con recharged as was of very little use, still there. Changed idler tensioner, still there. I have now been convinced it's the crankshaft pully! Bought siad pulley from GSF, good price and looks the business. Cars in my garage stripped apart and the pulley is totally differant. Mine is a basic pulley with nothing in the centre, looks like there never has been anything in the centre. GSF pulley is heavy with loads of weights etc. anybody else come across this?

Thanks for any help1

Maybe yours isn't the original. AFAIK all HDi's have the damped pulley.
