Over the last week we have had a spate of oxygen sensors failing causing stalling/flat spot problems. Having enquired around it would appear other dealers in Kent have been experiencing problems and whilst a dealer in south london had no problems by lunchtime, a text later in the day confirmed that 3 had arrived as breakdowns by the afternoon.

It would appear that affected customers are using Morrisons, Asda, Safeway, Tescos & Total garages and have all filled up in the last 7 days.....the fault isnt apparent immediately.

Obviously without testing fuel i am unable to point the finger at the fuel suppliers, but it does seem strange that a component that has been in use for a good many years has suddenly developed a fault that causes them to fail one after the other.

I can only assume that something within the fuel is coating the sensor and stopping it performing as intended.

I do know that fuel samples are being tested, and will post results when known......but until then....be careful, it may cost you £250.

As a final note, this isnt limited to Citroen, i know of another multi franchise dealership that has problems across its product range, and all at the same time.

Thanks for your post kfk - this was certainly the first place I saw the story.

Perhaps we are all sensible on this forum and run diesels.

I might just go and check the oxygen sensor on my 2CV though

Firms curb supplies in fuel scare

Unleaded petrol has been withdrawn from 41 Morrisons outlets. Two supermarket chains at the centre of the "faulty fuel" alert have moved to stop supplies of suspect petrol.

Morrisons has stopped selling unleaded at 41 outlets supplied by the Vopak depot in Essex - at the centre of suspicions over fuel.

Tesco is to empty its unleaded petrol tanks at 150 outlets in the South East, but will refill them with new stocks and continue selling the fuel.

Tesco's own tests found "significant silicon contamination" in its fuel.

A company statement said: "These tests show evidence of some significant silicon contamination in samples taken from unleaded petrol released from the Vopak terminal around 10 days ago.

Laboratory

"We believe this to be the source of contamination subsequently experienced by some customers in the south-east of England."

Other tests on petrol taken from the tank of a car affected by allegedly faulty fuel have detected the presence of silicon, trading standards officers said earlier.

Cambridgeshire County Council's trading standards department had the fuel sample tested at a London forensic science laboratory.

A spokesman said silicon in the fuel could indicate the presence of silicone - a class of chemical compounds containing the element.

Such products are used in diesel as anti-foaming agents, but can cause "serious problems" in petrol engines, a trading standards official said
