philstott1983 Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Have people been changing their head unit's or sticking to the factory fitted one? I have just the normal steroe that came with the car, not the JBL upgrade and dont have the navigation screen thing. Just wondering if people in this sort of situation have been changing their head units. Also if they have been doing, what about the controls available from the original head unit. By this i mean accessing the menu's for changing things like date and time, etc. Is it a case of you just have to be without being able to access the menu's, or are there headunits/equipment out there that still let you do it? Thinking of addind a stereo with more 'ooomph' for time when the jukebox needs cranking up Quote
kfk Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 When i was a lad...........we yearned for more oomph, those that had the money would get something with 15watts per channel......some 'car radios (we didnt call them ICE then) were still in mono, a bit flasher you would get a graphic equalizer with amp to stick in line with your speakers....and a bass boost button.....and a better model would allow the connection of 4 speakers (wow (sorry wow is what the tape did & flutter)) Outside the car you would have the longest whip aerial available......it went from front wing to rear qtr light glass and made from fibreglass would have any pedestrians eye out should it decide to flick up. Some cassette players would have auto reverse, most of them hissed at you and chewed up tapes. Radio reception was poor.....never could get to grips with turning the trimmer screw to improve medium wave reception......FM, which was new for cars drifted in and out, probably not helped by the long aerial mounted on the biggest rust patch possible on the wheel arch. Dunno how old some of you are but the radio was a means to cover up the various noises made by worn components, wind noise, a whining differential and a gearbox that should have been given the last rites. Oh how car technology has improved......6 speakers, decent volume, bass and treble controls, automatic tuning, steering wheel controls, CD player, Traffic Announcements..........looks like its supposed to be in the car........and there still not happy ......tell ya what, i got an audioline graphic equalizer going cheap, with a couple of wedge shaped parcel shelf speakers i'm sure i've got the whip aerial too somewhere  Whatever people have they will always want more......Have you seen the funky hearing aids people can get these days......obviously designed for those of us who always want something better......they cost several thousand pounds and give much better sound quality than the old beige ones our grand parents used to have......i suppose they will come with attachments for ipods soon if public demand is great enough......but you cant have one unless your Deaf! And before anyone takes this personally i'm having a laugh........but there is truth in it. Quote

wozza Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 On a serious note change the headunit is simple few of us have had aftermarket units in for a while. Now there are some issues On a model less than VTR+ you have to put the stock stereo in when you want to change a setting on the trip computer etc. VTR+ and above has all the needed buttons integrated into the steering wheel so the standard stereo is easily taken out without losing any functions. New unit goes in by way of BMW to ISO converters. And the sound quality is generally increased running amps etc is no hardship either. Got 2 in my car and they were fairly simple to install. Couple other guys have subs and amps etc too. The only thing you will loose is if you have rear parking sensors you will lose them. Although some stereos can apparently work with them. others cant. And volume controls etc again some units work with adapters some wont. Quote
Welshguy Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 @ philstott1983 I replaced my unit with an Alpine one connected to an Alpine 6 Disk MP3 changer :) Works very well, but as you mention there is the odd problem when I require the standard radio - take for example the switch to Summer Time...my clock is one hour slow in the car as I can't be bothered asking my brother to take my current Alpine unit out and switch it with the standard unit just to change the time! Just wait until Winter and the Time will be right again! Quote
jeremytaylor Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 I have a Pioneer head unit fitted to my VTR+. The parking sensors still work, but are loud and can't be turned down. The only other thing I've lost is the radio station display, which is no great loss as I have it on the new head unit. Everything else still works fine, all the buttons on the wheel, etc. Oh, and I've got the JBL in mine too. I think you will find that an adaptor for a Pug 307 will work fine in your C4. Quote

Did you just use a standard citroen to iso converter or one for a multiplex'd system? I presume this is what you mean by the Pug 307 one? Quote
