Mike123 Posted September 24, 2004 Posted September 24, 2004 All of a sudden the fan to the heater/ blower has stopped working but the fuse is fine. Have any of you any ideas where to start looking/checking for a fault or what the fault might be? Quote
DickieG Posted September 24, 2004 Posted September 24, 2004 The chances are that the fault will lay with the ignition switch as the heater fan takes it feed from there and this is a known weakness. You will have to remove the airbag if fitted and the steering wheel to gain access to the shroud around the ignition switch. Look for any signs of arcing/burning if none visible then start the car and run the fan then feel for heat from the switch. Quote
Mike123 Posted September 28, 2004 Author Posted September 28, 2004 Hi DickieG Thanks for the advice. I didn't realise I'd need to remove the steering wheel and air bag to get to the switch so that may be fun...... Will let you know how I get on. Quote
paul2309 Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 I have a similar problem, only mine is intermittent. When I start the engine the heater blower doesn't always start. If I stop the engine and restart a few times it usually then starts working. Is this likely to be the same thing. Quote
DickieG Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Paul, it would appear likely, its not too bad removing the steering wheel/airbag, I've done it many times on Xantias I've owned, replacing dash bulbs/heater matrix etc. You'll hear many tales of airbags possibly being set off, but personally I'm still here without a black eye or two! losjf Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 I have similar problem on my 1998 model, but I dont ike the idea of taking off the stering wheel and airbag, would it be possible to take a feed from somewhere else direct to the blower switch ? if so where from? and where to? [if not is it advisable to wear goggles and a crash helmet when removing the steering wheel ?] :) Quote

Hi I have just sorted this out.As posted the ignition switch was faulty. The way I have fixed it, if you locate the white cable block from the ignition switch & take a feed from the white wire, solder a small length of cable & then locate the brown cable block this is the feed to your heater fan, turn on the ignition & turn on the fan to max & with the not yet soldered end of the wire you have just fitted, poke it in to one of the red wires in the brown cable block, you will know when its right as the fan will turn on. Make a note of what red wire it is and solder them together, tape up the soldered ends and hay presto it fixed..You will note that the fan will turn off when the ignition is off just as before Quote
brummie3LV6xantia Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 thanks for posting this fix I'm going to have a go at it Quote
PhoenixC Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 I have had the same intermittent fan fault and also the drivers side electric window stopped workingon my fathers 1999 HDi.When I traced the fault I discovered it was actually down to a large multiplug in the passenger side footwell that had got wet and then corroded. Located herehttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/phoenixclub73/CopyofDSCF3770.jpg:Phttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/phoenixclub73/CopyofDSCF3765.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/phoenixclub73/CopyofDSCF3768.jpg Had to replace part of the wiring and the remake all the connections, after that problem solved :P Hope this helps anyone else Quote
deebo Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 goodness me! seems like quite a big big problem with xantias. mine's just packed up today. good to know what needs to be done, but how exactly do you remove the airbag/steering wheel? and how hard is it to get it back again as i'm not very technically minded? also is there an easy way of checking that it isn't just the fan that's packed up, so that i don't have to do all this for nothing? toldem_oldham Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Hi!!!!!! my heater fan has been squeaking and buzzing then stopped working ive replaced it with 1 from a pug 406 it looks the same and fits in but it only has 1 speed,my xantia has air con and was told the pug 406 had also but there is a very fine wire that fits to the original motor but no conector for it on the 1 ive put in,could that be the problem . paul. Guest Sweepdog Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 All of a sudden the fan to the heater/ blower has stopped working but the fuse is fine. Have any of you any ideas where to start looking/checking for a fault or what the fault might be? You might try the connections to the actual fan itself, as the ones on my van had worked loose. To gain access, you need to remove the glove box (press the retaining slides inwards), and then remove the cover panel behind that. That will expose the fuses. To the left of the fuse box is the fan, and below the fan is a connector block. Check all the spades on the wires, as a number of mine were wobbly. Cripm them up with a pliers and hey-presto. Working fine now. Quote
skysurfer Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 I'm not sure why people are talking about removing the steering wheel/airbag for this. I've had the lower steering coulmn cover off a couple of times, first for a turning indicator switch problem and again to fit a bypass relay for the ignition switch heater blower contacts on my 1997 1.9TD SX. (Xantia 2's should already have this relay fitted as standard). I've never had the steering wheel off in over 10 years of ownership. (But then I do have a few blown bulbs on the dash that I haven't bothered about!) Alan Quote
