Just accepted a new job, starting on the 11th June and with it comes a new car.

Afraid to say that I won't miss the C4 as it still isn't perfect and have given up trying to get the problems sorted. Unfortunately it just means that someone else in the Company will inherit it.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. :P

I have only heard bad things about new VW cars.

Skoda Octavia would be a better bet. IMHO. :P

Good luck with new job though.

Saying that have heard similar mates new Golf GTI has had no end of problems then again my mates sisters new GT TDI is fine and has been nothing but perfect.

I'm looking at buying a 2nd hand VTS180 now. Insurance is pretty good on them now and looking around can pick them up for less than £9k.

I don't get a massive choice. In my bracket is the Jetta/Golf/Golf Plus or I can downgrade and take a Mini Cooper and they'll give me some cash. Alternatively I can put some of my own money in and get an A3 or Passat but don't see any point in spending money on a company car.

Ultimately whatever it is will be free along with all fuel :P

I think the C4 in general has now become a good car, as all the common faults are now known, and the number of people complaining has reduced dramatically.

I still think its gonna be a typical French car in that, after about 3 years, its gonna feel shagged out.

I mean, mine is starting to rattle horrendously from the interior, and its only at 2yrs old (30500 miles).

And the heater has just done its party piece of blowing cold air only out of the drivers side, plus the front suspension still isnt sorted.

Im thinking of getting rid of mine next year. Had enough of the niggles. Im happy with the service I get from Hidsons at Rainham, can't fault it. But everytime I go there, its a 40mile round trip.

I must admit, the shine has worn off of my C4 now. It doesn't feel special to me anymore, I dont feel excited to get into it and drive it, its just a car to me now.

Its sad to say that, because its still a dramatic looking car, but its just the way I feel.

I know what you mean. My C4 is starting to rattle, the clutch is feeling a bit dodgey and the passenger side door is popping out along the lower edge of the window (Anyone else have this problem?). And, the cars only done 13K miles in the last 25 months. Its a bit like my Apple Macbook, looks the dogs b*llocks but just doesn't live up to its billing.

Had a drive of my mates BMW M1 yesterday. Hate the look of the car but I did get the feeling that the car was rock-solid and a far superior build quality. Think I'm also going to sell my C4 when it hits 3ys old and buy myself something German or Japanese.... Like the look of the new Honda Civic Type R or even flash the cash on a new Audi TT.

The new civic looks like its been driven through a halfords ripspeed section to me. Hate the look of the thing.

Also sure a guy on here had one or his wife did that was eventually sent back due to problems and sure mike said his brothers has had issues too.

Would not buy a TT though if you want a fun 2 seater car there are far better to be had. Its a posers car. Expensive too. Would rather spend similar amount of money on a proper 2 seater Corvette, VX220, Exige etc. All can be had for similar or lower prices and all would put bigger smiles on your face. Might even be able to stretch to a couple Porsche's at that price.

My C4 is nearly 2 years old now. And the only rattles I get are when the sub woofer is thumping a bit too loud. Bare in mind its an aftermarket system and you can feel the bass outside of the car it gives you an idea of how extreme the bass has to be to cause rattles.

But any rattle I did have I fixed a few myself no problems. Just put some packing foam in between a couple sections of the trim and they went. Everything else has been fine apart from my seat but I think thats due to when I asked for a squeak to be sorted it was not tightened up properly and came loose.

Agree that the TT is a bit of a hair-dresser poser car, however the latest model does seem to look a bit more serious and edgy. It certainly has had far better reviews. Agree that the Lotus Exige and VX220/Elise are awesome cars as is the Honda S2000 and the new Alfa Spider looks great. I actually test drove a 2nd-hand VX220 before playing safe and buying a brand new C4 Coupe purely for the comfort levels and the fact it would stand-out less when parked on a street at night. Already had one car nicked and don't want to have to go through that again.

The problem I have is that I really want a 2 seater whilst our Government isn't taxing us to hell and back for the right to drive it. I also do very little miles so figure might aswell have something that gets the blood-racing when travelling from a-b. But also need a car that i can fit my snowboard, mountain bike and girlfriend in (in that order :o )

Maybe a Golf GTI is a safe bet?

Corvette, Can pick up the slightly older model for less than £20k. 350 - 400bhp is more than enough for most people. Still get decent MPG for what they are. And they actually have a decent boot.

Im thinking of getting an Alfa 159 or a Saab 9-3 rag top.

They are the two at the top of the list at the moment.

Good luck with the new car - you certainly seem to have had a bellyfull of the C4.

Someone mentioned the Civic Type R earlier - check out Clarkesons review of that in the Sunday Times today - he reckoned he would rather walk than drive that car again! :o :( :P

the 9-3 is a nice car looked at one recently but again older model is far prettier the chrome around the lights on the new one ruins it for me. I'm not a fan of chrome at all.

Alfa 159 is a nice car though mate have a 156 for a couple years lovely car. But depreciation is worse than the C4. And build quality can be just as bad. But the engines are great. Same mate upgraded to a lexus IS 200 and said the power was rubbish the lexus was crap compared to the Alfa.

y only issue at the moment is theres not really any european cars out currently that are very appealing that get the balance of handling and build quality right for the price. Jap cars are great but amazingly dull. Love the civic interior but the rest of the car is awful hate the looks. Which is why im going American. Although I do like the new M3 which is saying something as I have made my views on BMW's fairly clear in the past.

Just wait til it gets to 62k like mine. Sounds like a tractor and bits rattle and knock everywhere oh and some trim has fallen off the boot.

Mines (1.6 HDi VTR+) at 55,000 and still quiet, with zero rattles and feels like it could go on forever - luck of the draw I suppose

Good luck with the new job BTW

I am told that my Jetta was ordered yesterday and 'cause I ordered an unusual colour and a few options it's going to take at least 12 weeks to arrive.

Therefore my new employer will be giving me a hire car, fingers crossed it is something respectable.

Whats the spec etc of the Jetta? Its summer should just say pay me the petrol money and use the VX have some fun while working :) lol.

I have ordered a 1.9tdi S in Red Spice with Parking Sensors and Arm rest with ipod connection and a couple of other bits.

Looks a little like this, although not seen one in this colour as there appear to be only 3 for sale in the UK....
