Guest Timbo Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Hi, new owner here. Just got hold of a 94 Xantia 1.9 turbo diesel. It drives great, but have a few newbie questions: 1) Only have one working key fob. The locks in both doors are not working so I am reliant on the remote central locking. I have read I can get a 2nd hand key fob and code it to the car - is this true? 2) related - is it simple to get another ignition key cut, and will this work on its own without the keyfob? 3) Checking the suspension fluid level. I have read the book. No matter what position the car is in, the yellow float is near the top of the tube, i.e. above the upper marker ring. Is this too much fluid or not enough please? 4) Seems to have a fairly impressive oil leak (didn't spot when purchased!). Oil is collecting in the tray which would be the battery tray if it were that side if you follow me! This seems quite high up - am thinking cam cover gasket. Any other idea's? 5) I have no idea when the cambelt was last changed, access looks tight! I will search past posts in a minute, but is it generally a DIY job on these cars? Many thanks in advance Tim Quote
DickieG Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 To answer your questions in turn, 1, Yes you can, turn the ignition onto it's first position then 'fire' the new remote, job done! 2, Yes it will as there is no immobiliser within the key on MK1 Xantia's. 3, If the LHM fluid level is above the marker no harm will be caused just the risk of spillage. 4, Cam cover gasket is one possibility, rear camshaft seal or head gasket are others. 5, Yes it is DIY, you'll need to lock the engine, camshaft and pump in position. The last two being done with bolts whereas the engine needs a bent rod or 8mm drill inserted behind the starter motor. If the camshaft cover is secured by bolts there is an odd one (11mm IIRC) hidden on the rear side. Take a close look at the water pump and tensioner while you're there. No 'special' tools required.
