bigandyd Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 Hi, is my gearbox on it's last legs? I have a 1998 Xantia 1.9td Series2 with 110k miles. All gears select fine apart from 2nd-3rd (ok when change is very slow) get a crunch noise and the same when changing down from 4th-3rd. All other gears are fine. Clutch is not slipping and have checked oil level in gearbox. Is my gearbox on it's way out, how long can it last like this and how easy is it to change or how expensive? Suggestions please as this is the only problem on this car. Otherwise drives great. Thanks Andy Quote
DickieG Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 It's more than likely due to the clutch 'dragging' (not clearing from the flywheel) as the fault affects more than one gear selection and slow changes are OK, this allows time for the shafts to stop spinning, therefore I would point my finger at the clutch rather than the gearbox. As the gearboxes are generally reliable they are cheap to source second hand, although changing a gearbox isn't particularly easy on a Xantia as the clutch has a pull rather than the normal push mechanism which makes re assembly a little difficult due to having to engage the lever arm on the thrust bearing. Only happens when changing up to or down to 3rd gear only. Is this still the clutch? How easy to change, cheap at garage on this model? Do not have any clutch slipping Thanks Quote
DaveK Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 New here, so first post. Have owned (two) Xantias since 1996. If the clutch releases ok from stationary and gets first and reverse without problems I'd guess the synchromesh has worn on the 2nd and 3rd gears. Don't go to the expense of a new clutch or replace the gearbox-, just do what I was brought up on: Double de-clutch.I'll explain if you don't know how (but others will beat me I'm sure).DaveK. Quote
