Hi Guys,

Great forum!

I have just acquired a Xantia 1.9 TD SX (1998, R 148k) and have a couple of minor (I hope!) niggling questions.

Firstly, when turning the steering wheel, whether the car is stationary or moving, I hear what I can best describe as a quiet hissing or squelching sound coming from behind the steering column (I think). Is this normal? A passenger suggested it may be an airlock in the hydraulics. If so how would I rectify?

Secondly, while experimenting with the heating/aircon controls, I got a whiff of something nasty through the vents (like hot, rusty water perhaps??), when set at a highish temperature.

Otherwise I am delighted with the Xantia, so far.

Can anyone help?

On the first question, check the fluid level of the LHM. You check it with the suspension raised high and the sight marker between the two lines on the sight glass - or with a finger poked into the reservior - you should just about touch the LHM. Then move several times from low to high; that should expel any air.

On the second question, check the level of the coolant tank a few times to make sure the heater matrix isn't leaking. Also if it was, the carpets could be damp. If all's well, leave the engine running with the heater on hot. Sometimes the air conditioning leaves the hoses full of dampness which breeds bacteria.
