HI GUYS, my getting old 2.0hdi estate wont light up the brake lights in the tailgate, the top, horizontal one comes on (just as well!!!) any ideas of the problem? could it be the foot switch, on the pedal? i have looked there, and there are 2 leads going into spade connectors, does one do the top light, and tuther do the tailgate ones?? cannot see any wiring breaks, all the other tailgate lights work, 138000 miles, not run in yet

The fact that the central brake light is working suggests that the switch is working correctly.

The extra leads you mention are more than likely connected to the engine management system, try braking whilst accelerating and you'll find the engine slow significantly.

You mention the "Brake lights in the tailgate" err on Xantia's there aren't any as they are located on the wings, are you checking the right bulbs?

well there is a central brake light on my xantia tailgate! I had a problem with the brake lights which was the pedal switch at the end of it, replace it

there is not 2 wires. its one wire with a breaker in it (the switch). ignition live travels down wire to the switch. when the switch is pressed (de-pressed in this case) the connections make contact allowing the ignition live to continue down the same wire to the brake lights. if the high level brake light is working it can not be the switch thats at fault.
