Hi there everyone, please can you help me?

I have an M reg Xantia 1.9 TD which had an intermittent starting problem, until now! Now it won't start at all.

When I turn the ignition key, only the battery and handbrake light illuminate. The engine will turn, but doesn't fire.

I've tried a replacement glow plug relay, and have even rigged up a "by-pass" switch direct to the plugs, but still the extra lights on the dash do not work.

I have seen in one of the other posts something about removing a link between fuses 15 and 16. What does this do?

I really would appreciate any help in rectifying this fault (I think KFK and Dickie G have assisited people previously)

I have an ok knowledge of cars, but this one has me a bit stumped.

Please help???

When the car refuses to start is was it parked facing uphill by any chance? If so then that would indicate a small leak on the fuel line (normally the primer bulb has a small split) bear in mind with such leaks that they rarely leave a residue because the pipe is sucking at this point, so it will let air in (allowing the fuel to run back to the tank) but not allow fuel to leak out. Try squeezing the primer bulb until it becaomes hard then try starting the engine.

The non illuminating glow plug light could be a busted bulb 'red herring'. Have you checked that the glow plugs themselves are OK?

Hi there.

The car has only ever been parked on level ground.

It doesn't seem as though it's a fuel problem, it appears to be electrical because none of the dash lights illuminate except the battery and handbrake lights.

It was originally intermittent. I could always tell when it would/ wouldn't start depending on how many lights were lit when the key was turned.

I've been told by a friend that the glow plugs are ok, but haven't checked myself.

xantia's are very prone to the wire's in the harness across the front rotting away from witjin.

sounds to me like you have no power to back of the fuel pump solenoid. you have fitted bypass switch to the glow plugs so getting power there. try putting power to the pump when lights are out (small 8mm nut at back of pump) heat as normal and see if car starts.

if so you can then put a switched live to this and car should start all the time.if this not the case let me know and i'll ask my mate at work who electric guru on citreon

Thanks for your advice Streaky. I'll give it a whirl this week and let you know how I get on.
