Good evening Gentlemen.

I have been tasked with finding out what is wrong with my sister-in-laws C3 1.4 Diesel. 2004 model.

There is a strong smell of sooty exhaust in the cabin.

There is a 'ticking' noise from the left end of the engine, most noticeable on idle.

Although I cant see it I have the suspicion that there may be an EGR valve somewhere there that has gone faulty. Am I right and how easy is it to fix?

Many thanks.

Derek.

If you take a look at the injectors you will find one or more of the injectors have diesel around them and the noise you are getting isnt so much a ticking as a chuffing noise. Because the injector is leaking combustion gasses it builds up in the engine compartment and comes in to the cabin via the heater inlet.

You need to remove the offending injector and replace the copper seal on its base before reassambleing. Its unlikely that you will be able to tighten the injector to resolve the problem, and also liely that the seat in the head where the injector sits will require recutting to allow the new copper seal to seat.

If you need to get this done by a dealer allow £350, it needs a special tool to clean the injecor seat, something i doubt anyone but a maindealer would have.
