Now I know that my 2005 2.2 HDi is not the fastest thing on four wheels, and I know what to expect when I take off from the lights, and I know that it really only starts to pull at about 3000rpm. But here is a curious thing...

Every day when I head home from my office I have to turn out onto an 80Km/H dual carriageway. Therefore I sometimes need to accelerate away from the impending traffic heading up my exhaust. The entrance from our office to this road has quite a downhill slope to it, followed by an uphill slope immediately on the road. All of this happens within a space of about 7 metres. When I try to accelerate (even with my foot flat to the floor) there can be a nerve racking delay of up to 3-4 seconds before there is any response from the engine.

This does not happen under any other circumstances and I can only put it down to the downhill slope followed by the immediate incline uphill. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Cheers

Rick

I think there's definitely something wrong with your engine. My 2004 2.2hdi estate pulls strongly from about 1500rpm and I rarely need to rev it beyond 3000.

Checks:

Carpet or mat under accelerator causing throttle not to go to full wick.

Same issue with cable stretch not taking throttle pot to full wick.

Is there a leak anywhere in the inlet manifold? It could be that one of the rubber hoses that forms part of the manifold is off somewhere? Worth checking the whole inlet path, this is exactly what would happen if a hose was loose, leaking or not replaced properly.

My experience is the same as davidad's, the engine pulls well from 1,500 and goes into orbit at 2,750-3,000 rpm. Full throttle take off result in screeches and ESP/ASR intervention, so I don't do that.

Rick I just had my 2.0 hdi fixed after loosing power when cold - sounds similar. My problem was a failed air mass meter.

Might be a good idea to get the car on a diagnostic just to rule it out if nothing else.

Hope this helps

Yep, sorry I got the 3000rpm it wrong, it normally pulls from about 1500. I wondered if the problem was that the turbo had not really spun up to speed by the time I put my foot down. I tried to rev the engine a little in neutral first and this seemed to help. I will check again. However there is certainly no chance of wheel spin from standstill.

There also appears to be some sort of clicky button under the accelerator, does this do anything or just tell me to back off?
