Kev'Nix Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 Hi, anyone else feeling that the tyre inflation kit instead of proper or even pacesaver wheels is a retrograde safety issue? We're just taking delivery of an Exclusive Picasso 2.0 petrol which has the pneumatic rear suspension. We are exchanging our Scenic which has full sized spare internally, not the flimsy cradle underneath as on my old Xsara Picasso. We found that we have a dinky modubox, not as good as the Picasso's and then were shown the tyre inflation kit as a wonder of wonders. Whilst I am happy overall, I'd rather have had a spacesaver in a cover instead of the shopping trolley. You have no other tyre so if you have even a small puncture which is repairable if you fitted the spare, due to using the inflation kit the tyre is unusable. Not only that but obviously you need to buy a replacement inflation kit before you have another puncture!! Nice little earner Citroen!!!And then they try to sell you tyre insurance (max 2 tyres per year for 2 years). If Citroen can't find a way to instal a spare tyre, surely the additional costs should be borne by Citroen as a mark of their failure.Surely it's a conservation issue as Citroen are adding otherwise usable tyres to the piles of old tyres.Anyone want to comment? Is Citroen big enough to accept that a shopping bag is a woeful substitute for a spare tyre. Due to the pneumatic suspension, they cannot even fit a cage underneath, which needs a security lock as thieves can easily 'pop' the catch and make off with your brand new spare!!!Over to you Quote
kfk Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 i would have thought in this day and age that we would have been using self supporting run flat technology by now......but i would guess that the cost of this would have been passed onto the customer and thus increasing the cost of the vehicle.....and it still it wouldnt have had a spare. Still no facility to fit a spare wheel carrier is the privilige of having air suspension...you cant have both......however with the coil spring setup you can atleast get a space saver and retro fit a carrier. Guest Colin Hunter Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 The can of tyre sealant/inflator is not a new idea. It has been around in one form or another for many years. There are also products available which you put in your tyres, which claim to seal punctures as they occur. See http://www.vikingseal.co.uk/ and http://www.tyreprotect.co.uk/ . None of these will help if the tyre is badly damaged of course. Only a spare will do then. I always carry one of those small 12v tyre inflators when away from home. They will usually overcome a slow puncture and let you make a few more miles without changing the wheel if you have one. I have to agree that there is no substitute for a spare wheel, space saver or otherwise. Even the guys at my local dealership aren't very impressed with the "can of goo" approach. But to be fair, punctures are not an every day occurrence. I don't think I've had to change a wheel on the roadside for many years. I also think the "Modubox" is nothing short of a gimmick. There are many people who must feel the same because Picassos and Berlingo Multispaces are very popular here, and I've yet to see anybody using one. Cheers. Quote
