Guest Terryd Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Hi, has anyone found a supplier for one of these or can the timing belt be done without one? What are SEEM units? :) Thanks Quote
iannez Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 hate them. diffrent reading every time you take it off the belt and put it back on. good idea if your unsure how tight the belt should be but then again if you dont know how tight the belt should feel you should not realy be doing this job. far to expensive if you make a mistake. Guest Terryd Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Well finally got round to replacing the belt at 73475 miles. Found a pal with a newly acquired Contitech tensioning device. At a cost of £250 it is not really for one off use. Seemed to work satisfactorily and belt manufacturers are quite clear that incorrect tension is one of the major causes of failure so whilst experience may be adequate, I feel any measuring device must be beneficial. Ordered a water pump at the same time and found the old pump was ready for a replacement as there was limescale evidence around the bearing suggesting a significant leak was not far off. I would recommend a pump replacement at every belt change. Contitech are manufacturing a full belt and pump kit but I could not find a supplier. Still no clearer on what are SEEM units :( . Quote
Johndouglas Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Still no clearer on what are SEEM units :( . There are several different makes of tension gauge. Trouble is they all use their own degrees of measurement. Sykes Pickervant measure in Kgs; Burroughs measure in Newtons; Seem measure in units (although they have two different gauges); BMW have their own gauge which measures in units (but not the same units as Seem) and Burroughs/Rover measure in units (but different units to BMW or Seem); VAG also have their own gauge which measures in units (but different again) Unfortunately, there is no rule of conversion to change from one measure to another. My own particular gauge is the Burroughs for which I have a conversion table to convert Seem units as quoted by PSA, to Newtons. Quote
