C5 2.2 Hdi Auto Mpg ? + Problems Already

Hi All ...

Just bought a 2003 C5 2.2 HDI auto , and I`m getting problems with the car already ..

When I test drove the car before buying it ( private sale) it was very impressive , quiet , smooth and a pleaure to drive..

But on the journey home after about 15 miles the ESP light came on the dash , ESP/ASR inoperative flashed up on the computer followed by the Anti-pollution filter warning ...

I stopped the car at the next lay-by , switched off and waited a couple of minutes...

Turned it back on and the ESP light went out , but the service and engine management light stayed on ...

After about 20 miles the ESP light came on again !!!!........and stayed on till I got home .

Later that evening I took the car to my son`s to show him !! , and the ESP didn`t light up when I started the car , but the service and engine management lights did ........

He took the car out for a drive and when we came back he said , thats odd all the warning lights have gone !! , great I thought ....

He turned the car off and we looked around it ,then went to start it again , and nothing !! , just a loud click from under the bonnet and from the gear selector console inside the car when trying to start the it..,,like a solenoid noise ..

We left the car for a while then tried again , the same thing it wouldn`t start , then after he tried it about a dozen times ,and it started !!!

I drove the car home ,parked up ,switched off and tried it again , Nothing ,just the same loud click .

Great I thought , what have I bought here !!! TROUBLE ????

The next day I came home from work , got in the car ,switched on , and no warning lights showing , uh , turned the key and it started straight away , switched off ,tried again and yep it started again .

Did the same again today after work, and it was fine again ....

Problem I have now is what caused this problem and is it going to happen again ??? , to be honest I don`t have any trust in the car and after reading more and more bad reviews I`m begining to regret buying this car ..

The other issue people are saying is that the auto`s are very heavy on diesel , but I did check out the mpg figues before buying and a lot of reviews were saying around 40 mpg is the norm ??

Can anybody throw any light on the above problem ,and does anybody on here have the 2.2 HDI auto ? if so what do you roughly get to the gallon ??

Cheers

Ray ...........

C5, XM, CX, DS. They are like dogs. Not just for Xmas, but for life. Like an Alfa Romeo, a car for enthusiast owner. If you want some thing similar but more reliable try the Peugeot version of a Citroën car. 405=BX, 406=Xantia, 407=C5

Did you check the official figures? The ones in my manual for the auto are much worse than the manual.

Can anybody throw any light on the above problem

Have you checked the battery as suggested?

I have a 52 plate 2.2 HDi auto estate with 33k on the clock. After 1500 miles at an average speed of 22mph!(all bar 200miles is stop start commuting) I get about 33mpg.On a motorway blast, steady 65-70 I get about 55plus.I'm happy.
