micki Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 you can get to the pedel from under the dash with two 13 mm spanners it is fiddly but can be done mind your back as it is tight in the footwell with the seat there i have being told by citroens that it was quite common fault (thanks for telling me afterwards) all the best Quote

richardreed_1 Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Hi, tell me about it !!! mine broke and a replacement part cost a mere £ 7.50.... but fitting it...forget it if you aren't quite as bendy as you used to be , ( I am over 50). Apparently the entire dashboard has to be removed, which means the stearing wheel has to be removed etc...etc...I asked the main Citroen dealer to do the job and it cost me £ 320.00 for 4.5 hours work  . I'm getting an automatic next time ;) Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Wouldn't bother with an auto if I was you. Have a look at Parkers website http://www.parkers.co.uk/ and have a look at the running costs. Some of the more modern Autos are OK (Sensodrive DSG etc which are basically automated manual boxes) but most of the "traditional" autos take a BIG hit in what these days masquerades as a "Budget" (Read let's have another go at smokers, drinkers and motorists!). That, and the inevitable reduced MPG, will probably releive you of more than £320 over the year! Your Choice! :( Quote
bobpm45 Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 After replacing the plastic cable retainer on my xantia with one "acquired" from a scrap yard , it broke again a few weeks later ! I then made one from a piece of aluminium , and that bugger aint broke ! But this problem stems from the fact that the clutch pedal was getting stiff , which was because the clutch was on its way out ! I have now fitted a new clutch ,which coupled with alumininum retainer , means I should have no further problems. By the way , as previously mentioned ,it is possible to do the clip yourself .But you do have to be quite agile and patient and not too big ! Quote
Guest kiddykid Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 cost me £120 to get the clip done, told to expect clutch replacement in next 3 months.i bet that will cost a small fortune, plus its due for a cam belt change. Quote
bobpm45 Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Having done all my own car repairs over the years, I decided to do the clutch myself after doing a read up in the Haynes manual. The clutch kit cost about £50 , but it was a nightmare of a job which takes a fair amount of mechanical knowledge and patience ! Also it took me about two weeks working on it when I could. Would have been easier with two people . I fitted long pieces of "all thread " into the bell housing when re-fitting the gearbox to help with the alignment of the forked clutch pulling arms . When all was in line and gearbox mated correctly , I replaced the all thread wiith the correct bolts. Getting those arms to line up with the rear of the release bearing was probably the most annoying part(torch required) , but there was lots of satisfaction when I finally got it back on the road !! Finally , if your plastic clip broke , then it will probably break again soon if your clutch pedal is stiff to press. Quote

Hi, I have exactly the same problem only the advice given all seems to apply to the MK1 Citroen xantia where the steering colunm does not have a back plate running from behind the steering wheel all the way down to the front of the pedals, I cannot get any spanners in to undo my pedal retainning bolt, so I have had to strip off my steering wheel and steering colunm to reveal the steering colum backplate all relatively easy and straight forward most plugs are colour coded and the airbag bit in the haynes manual is probably the best written bit of the book altogether.my dialema now is undoing the colunm backplate not knowing if it will go easily back into place. I really hope you don't have as much trouble with this as i am having, it seems very difficult to actually get any decent stripdown information on this car.my love affair with this model is almost at breaking point over this stupid design floor.if you have any luck keep us posted please? I have found a phone number online to obtain a metal clip replacement instead of the nylon Citroen part: the company is called C.G.S Autosystems phone: 01452-311110. good luck.all the best Nigel Quote
Penguin Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Has anyone bought one of these clips recently as another forum I noticed online has said they have stopped selling them (early 2007) due to them breaking clutch cables. My clip broke yesterday and its going to cost a fair few quid to replace in labour and I don't really want to replace the clutch just yet until I'm sure the car is worth spending the money on. I also don't want to have to pay for a new plastic clip to be fitted and then have to pay again when it breaks again! In response to Citroen putting the bolt in the wrong way around I assume that it's because they didn't think to turn it around when going from lhd to rhd. Cheers Edit: Just to confirm I have phoned CGS and they no longer manufacture said clip. Quote
candpdoyle Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Hello mate i got the plastic bit from gsf yesterday morning, had to get the metal spring clip and a new pedal bolt from the main dealer though... Absolute pig of a job <_< took me 3 hours and a lot of blood, sweat and cursing... but it is done and cost less than £20 in total ;) so there is a bright side lol Chris Quote
judypacha Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Clutch cable broke yesterday, was quoted £42 for citroen replacement, £21 for copy part from motor factor.went to local scrappy got cable & electric window motor for £10. took out seat to get lying flat on floor, 2 x 13mm spanners to remove pedal, had to remove pedal as broken end of cable was still inside white clip, clipped in new cable end securely before replacing pedal. I'm build like a brick s**thouse, had real trouble getting shoulders into footwell to see the problem, biggest problem was getting bolt for pedal back in when the spring tension gets high.Quick tip: get your smallest friend round to help, you need someone with small hands & doesn't mind all their blood running to their head..! Guest androcles Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 In an effort to avoid potential clutch pedal connection thingy breaking, is it worth making the slightly extra effort of using the clutch really really gently and smoothly at all times? - smooth, smooth gear changes using the lightest foot/leg movement possible (without causing gearbox teeth to meet and greet noisily of course), no sitting in first gear (or rocking the car back and forth on the clutch if facing up a hill) at traffic lights rather than simply using the handbrake etc. All good driving habits anyway and such mindful driving looks after any clutch nicely of course but will it make a difference to the longevity of what appears to be an incredibly fragile, prone and ludicrously-difficult-to-fix-and-you're-stuck-where-you-are-when-it's-broken part? techbod Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 this is a common fail with the newer xantia and to get rid of it ( fit the older manual tension type used in the BX ) the cable fits ok, the problem on the newer type is the auto tensioner where the cable goes through the bulk head it fails the older type doesn't Quote

roystadoysta Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Hi, done this myself recently. Unfortunately i did the whole dash out thing. you don't have to. theres a 13mm nut and bolt that goes through the pedal box. with your head in footwell and lying on your back with feet up near seat headrest (seat reclined). don't worry about the return spring it goes back together quite easily. once the pedal drops free, release clip and pull out. replace plastic retainer and clip ( 8 pounds from citoen dealer, you probably won't need a cable) to the pedal, feed cable into retainer making sure it's fully home and locate clip. make sure the clip is correct position or cable may pull straight out when you first try it. Re-assemble. should be fairly easy, it took me three days the other way, i reckon 1-2 hours this way. good luck. Quote
ray gray Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Replaced mine couple of years ago.Friendly loca main dealer told me how. Remove front seat to give more room. Remove pedal bolt wich is in so as to be hard to get out (replace other way round) but will come out with brute force and a tyre lever. He told me thats how they do it in 1 hour Quote
