toastyhamster Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 All, My temp gauge has stopped working. Well nearly. Just donw around 300 motorway miles and on the return journey the temp gauge went off, then occasionally we saw the bottom bar light up. No problems getting home, and there's plenty of coolant in the header tank - top of the radiator is hot, but bottom is only luke warm to touch. In car heater works - but doesn't seem that hot when I put it on max. Any idea what could cause this? Water pump? Engine didn't smell like it was overheating, although since I got it back from it's repair I've noticed a slight burning smell from the rear of the car - I'd assumed this was overspray on the exhaust or something similar - but maybe not. Anything I can test to prove or disprove? Citroen c4 vtr+ Coupe Thanks Quote
Johndouglas Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 since I got it back from it's repair What repair? Has the radiator been out or emptied? Quote
toastyhamster Posted March 24, 2008 Author Posted March 24, 2008 New rear offside wing and rear suspension, nothing forward of the doors. Quote
Johndouglas Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Exhaust smell is as you say, overspray. But that should quickly burn off and the smell disappear. Might be worth having the thermostat checked. It could be stuck open. Quote
toastyhamster Posted March 25, 2008 Author Posted March 25, 2008 I agree. Did 200 motorway miles today and I only saw the first line on the gauge light up briefly when I put my foot down on the way home this evening. Radiator is still cold at the bottom and heater only really gets hot after 50 or so miles, and even then it's not what it was. Booked in on 10th for this and hopefully the ESG recall if they can get the parts. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Dodgy temp gauge sender unit, has been a known problem and can cause car to think it is overheating and go into limp home mode. Quote
