boguing Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I'm attempting to remove the 30mm nut in order to get the hub off to change the bearing. I'v chiseled out the staking and applied so much torque that I snapped the 4" 1/2" drive... It looks like a std thread, but should I perhaps be trying clockwise instead? Quote
Johndouglas Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 It's unlikely that ZX are different from Pug 205 and those I've removed anti-CW. They are very tight - about 200 lbs/ft. I use a socket and tommybar with a 3 foot double forked bar. Quote
boguing Posted April 2, 2008 Author Posted April 2, 2008 I'm using an 8 foot steel bar. Broken another 4" extension. First was quite spectacular - landed twenty feet away. So, armed with new 'Lifetime Warranty' Teng Tools T handle (bent the old one about 45 degrees, and a new 4" extension, tomorrow I'll have another go.... Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Don't bother messing about with a 1/2" drive set. It just hasn't got the strength to crack off the nut. If you don't have a 3/4" set, take the car down to a garage that does and get them to crack it off for you. Re-tighten it enough to get you home and the 1/2" set will take it from there. They are standard rh threads both sides. When doing them up again the common practice is to put on a decent length tommy bar and "Dance" on the end! Cheers. Hope this helps! Quote
boguing Posted April 2, 2008 Author Posted April 2, 2008 John and Colin, thanks. The trusty pole had had no problem with the two rear hubs, just defeated by this front one. If I bust the new one tomorrow, I'll take it back "under warranty" and upgrade to 3/4". He who dies with most tools wins. John. ps. I have a Land Rover too, so 3/4" is probably a good idea. Snap the bolts more easily. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Have a look on Ebay. I got a 3/4" set for £25! Bloody alright too! (carriage to Shetland was a bit steep though!) Cheers, and happy tinkering/struggling! :) Quote
boguing Posted April 3, 2008 Author Posted April 3, 2008 So. I bent the new T bar. Now the proud owner of a 3/4" drive T bar, extension and socket. Will that shift it? I'll let you know after coffee. Quote
since1875 Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 i just removed mine last week Anti-Clock wise they where tight but i used my extension and with gritted teeth and a few choice words it came! Try spraying the old trusty WD40 and leave it for a bit. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Hi Again Regarding the 3/4" socket set, it's the age old story really! "Never send a boy to do a man's job" Cheers. Happy doing up! :) Quote
