Stekelly Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Got myself a new (2nd hand but in top condition ) key on ebay a couple of weeks back, to replace omy 2 keys that I got with the car , both of which the lockign button is broken off. Does anyone know if it can be recoded using the methods set out online (highly doubt it but just want to make sure) or will I have to go to a main dealer? I'm guessing the diy method of coding only works for a key that was already coded to the car in question to begin with and just dropped the code, but to get a key coded to a different car altogether its a main dealer job? With regard the new key I bought, it's physically in much better nick than the other 2 I have, does anyone know how to take the blade out of the key so I can put mine in? Or is it a factory job and once its in its in, meanign new key altogether or carring 2 keys (one to lock/unlock and one for the ignition)? Off topic, but who the hell ever thought mounting the buttons sideways onto the pcb would be a good idea? Quote
kfk Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 I very much doubt you will get the second hand keys to program to your car, with regard to swopping the keyblade over....the pivot pin is available as a spare part...one bit presses into the other...best thing to do is pop to your dealer and lok at the part...you will see how its fitted together that way. A sensible suggestion.......your old keys obviously dont work because the button has come off....presumably they worked ok till that point. Why not find an old fashioned radio/tv repairer and ask him to swop the switch from one to the other......providing you dont get charged more than £40 and it works i would think it to be the best option. Have soldered plenty of switches back onto the circuit boards. Incidently, it might seem a poor idea to mount the switches that way round......but what i can never understand is how pushing the button harder will provide a signal when the battery is ussually flat......now if batterys were like toothpaste tubes i could understand the principle, but there not! Stekelly Posted May 11, 2008 Author Posted May 11, 2008 Might try getting the buttong soldered from the new key to the old. Both keys were broken when I go the car. It only has 53k miles so either they are flimsy or there was a hard buttin pressing owner before. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Have a look at this website and try it out before going any further. The instructions for the Xantia sound OK to me. http://www.programyourkeys.com/ Cheers. Let us know if it works! Quote
Stekelly Posted May 11, 2008 Author Posted May 11, 2008 Was just thinking out loud there, Is there any chance a Xsara key could be programmed to work on the xantia? Do they not have flat mounted buttons? so that the button isnt pushing against the contacts on the pcb? I'll give the method on the site a tr tomorow Colin but the reason I dotn think it will work with a key from another car is that surely anyone with a xantia key could use this method to streal other xantias by coding the key to that car. Which is why I think it would have to be decoded then recoded for the new car. again, just me thinking out load. Quote
kfk Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 1st off the Xantia models have 2 types of keys, the are both different to Xsara. With regards thos programing instructions......i would be very interested to hear if anyone made them work.....never seen it done like that. With regards to the second hand keys you have acquired..... it is unlikely you will be able to get them to program to your vehicle, i doubt a main dealer would be able to do it either. If iannez is out there maybe he would like to comment......i maybe wrong Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Couldn't possibly guess on that one! Try asking at your local dealership. The two button RF key for the Xsara Picasso has the buttons "Flat" rather than on the edge. There are loads of Keys to be had on Ebay as you probably know! I asked my local (Very helpfull) Citroen guys about getting a 2nd "Plip" key for my Picasso from Ebay and they said it was "Tricky but possible" to programme it in, but you'd also need the key "Blade", which apparently contains the immobiliser microchip before you could start the car. Cheers. Quote
