Hi everyone,

I just joined the forum...greetings to all. I must say this forum really looks great. Congratulations to all for making this a great place.

I have a 99 Xantia with a 2.0 HDI 90 engine in it. I bought it used four years ago and it was in good condition then, and it still is. ;-) I've taken real good care of it (servicing it myself, putting only fully synthetic oil it, changing the oil frequently etc) and it has taken good care of me. It has 176 tkm on th meter and it hardly burns any oil (less than half a liter doing 10 tkm).

Recently there has been a ticking / clinking noise coming from the general area of the block. It's not there when the engine is cold, but already after ca 20 minutes of running you can hear it. It's a clinking sound like someone banging one or more of the valves on a stone or something.

I'm pretty surprised coz the engine is in real good shape. Still runs well, accelerates well. Has anyone experienced this before? What do you think... is it the tappets, the cam or the valves themselves?

Your help will be truly appreciated.

Cheers,

Gabriel

Have you checked that the noise isn't coming from the crank pulley. They don't last for ever.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. I changed the crank pulley about a year ago because it had become really noisy (I live in Croatia it cost me €320 just for the darned part). I could hear the noise from that better standing on right side of the car since it's placed on that side of the engine -I guess. This time if I am listening from outside the engine room, the noise is louder standing on the left hand side.
