Hi,

My car has always been known (well, since I got it) to throw out a tad bit of smoke, which I mostly notice when driving in the dark (mostly at higher revs) and someone is behind me (i.e. I can see it through their lights).

I just noticed, whilst parking up, a fair bit of black smoke from the exhause so I done a bit of testing (as you do). If you rev (in neutral) slightly, it seems ok and the smoke doesn't appear until you're pretty high up the rev range, about 4-5k RPM. I took it for a drive, nothing unusual, so I start to listen out for the (usually subtle) turbo whistle. I can't hear anything, although it's never in your face anyway and it's only occasionally I tend to hear it, but nothing today... I don't really think there is much (if any) turbo kick going on either, it feels like acceleration is constatnt up the range, but it does drive well (if that makes sense).

Maybe my mind (and ears) are playing tricks? Is it possible for the car to work without any turbo action and if the turbo has seized (or whatever), would this produce the smoke?

Problems always occur when I'm about to go somewhere... I'm about to make a 500 mile round trip tomorrow, but I'm worried I'll not make it!!!

Thanks in advance for you help, as always.

Best wishes,

Peter

If the turbo wasn't working you'd know it wasn't. It would be gutless. Try some Millers or diesel Redex in the tank. Maybe the injectors need cleaning.

I agree with JD I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Have you had any work done to the fuel pump recently? An increase in fueling can create more of the amount of smoke under load from the exhaust, its due to very small amounts of unburnt diesel entering the exhaust manifold and nothing to be concerned about.

It doesn't really affect the fuel economy either. I would try what JD has suggested and it can only improve things and might even improve performance/ economy.

Hi guys... Thanks for your advice. I added some Diesel / injector stuff a little while back, but maybe it needed a few treatments. I'm happy to know I would know if the turbo was goosed, so happy to know it's not such an issue at the moment.

Nothing has been done to the fuel pump...

Cheers,

Peter

I would also have a look at the air filter. That might need changing.

I had the BIG FULL service about 5,000 miles ago so that shoud've been done then.

Anyhow, my trusty Citroen saw me through the long journey as I kept at a steady pace (70-75MPH), although the engine warning light did come on, coming back, 10 miles from home (whilst driving a faster pace, i.e. 90 ish) as per my previous problem. See:

I even managed to hear the turbo whistle and purr correctly the other day, so turbo is intact. Marvellous ;)

Cheers,

Peter
