ukguy Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Hi all. I am hoping someone can help with a problem that has come up on our 2002 model Citroen C5 1.9HDI auto. The car looks like it has gone into limp mode, where it seems to be very sluggish like it's always in a high gear. An indication has come up in the central cockpit display also showing 'Gearbox Fault'. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how was it cured. I have done some research on Google and it looks to have been a common fault on the earlier Citroen C5. But I have yet to find out what this 'common fault' was. I'd rather had a reasonable idea before I take it to a mechanic out of the yellow pages who'd probably advise a new gearbox... Also, can anyone recommend a decent independent Citroen garage in the North West please, so I can get this fixed in the knowledge that the garage won't rip me off ? Thanks very much. Quote

Most Citroens have a limp home mode to prevent further damage ton the engine and gearbox, It could be something as simple as a gearbox sensor gone faulty. Closest specialist in the North west that I know of and have a very good reputation would be:Westroen Sphere Services7 Nell La, Manchester, M21 8UE0161 881 1061 They specialise in suspension and sphere issues but have a good general citroen background and don't charge the earth. Give them a ring and explain the problem, they might be able to shed some light on it but I would say that any garage is going to have to see the car in order to plug it in for fault diagnosis so be expected to travel. If you are a member of the AA or RAC, drive a mile from home. Ring themand ask them to recover the vehicle and take it to your chosen repairer. You might as well use and abuse them as thats what you pay for. Quote

I will give the above place a call tomorrow to see if they can assist. Searching through the archives, I see someone else had this problem and it turned out to be a faulty gearbox solenoid. I hope it's the sensor/solenoid as the complete gearbox would be a fortune! Are there any other citroen gearbox specialists recommended in the North West, just in case these guys can't help? The car is driveable so it shouldn't be too much of an issue getting it there. Thanks again! Quote

Are you referring to these or the gearbox oil? One thing I have noticed, the fault is not so much there until you have driven around for about 15 minutes or so, like when the engine has warmed up. Then the gearbox indication fault comes up and it starts getting very very jerky when the gearbox attempts gear changes as the car chugs along. It's interesting to hear that you had the same sort of symptoms though and it was cured so look forward to your reply. Thanks. Quote

Thanks.hi sorry for delay in answering but been away.its the oil and filter clean in the gearbox that was done. there is no way of checking the oil level on the box so just drain it all out and refill with correct amount filler plug is under the g/box top mounting. as it sounds like low fluid in the box. hope this helps Quote

You mention the filler plug is in the gearbox top mounting. Is this easily accessible once the engine undertray is off? Do you know where the gearbox drain bolt and gearbox filter is please? We already enquired with a local dealer and they were practically no help at all as they said the gearbox was non maintenance and you couldn't refill the gearbox oil! Thanks again. Quote

Thanks again.hiif you rmove the tray from underneath then go to the bottom of the gearbox just under the pass side driveshaft you will see the drain plug. youll need if memory serves me right its a 19mm square drive undo it and see how much comes out should be about 3 litres. if theres not that much comes out and your vehicle has less than 100k on the clock then i would just refill and try. to refill it remove the air filter look down and youl see three bolts holding the g/box mounting onto the chassis take the weight of the g/box on a jack and remove the mounting and youl find the filler plug there (on occasions in the past i have yoused the speedo drive to refill) itl take 3 litre. once done leave you car ticking over till the oil gets pumped around before driving it. the filter is a little bit more involved but is now way frightnen if you have a bit common sense let me no if you need info. I had a go this afternoon but didn't complete the job. Found the drain plug and undone that. About 2 litres come out. I couldn't get the air filter shroud off though. Can get the filter out no problem but the assembly won't budge. I guess I need to take out the battery tray but will wait for the manual to ascertain exactly what's required. Then maybe tackle the filter ;) Thanks again. Quote
