Hello all

Just joined this forum, bought a 54 reg HDi last week and took delivery yesterday, 55k on the clock but one owner and dealer serviced etc. So far I've driven it locally and it had a stint of motorway driving this morning. Had a few niggles and questions so I found this forum and thought some helpful people on here might know the answers

Got a 12 month warranty too, but limited to £1000 claim per job and £25 excess - might any of the following be warranty issues?

The brakes are squealing in a horrible high pitched way, the dealer who sold it to me said this should wear off, probably due to steam clean/valeting or something. Shouldn't it have worn off after several days! I've since found posts on this here mentioning dicky brake pads, does this need a trip to the garage?

There is vibration/shudder at 70mph and over, didn't go any faster than 75 though, don't know if the shudder will peter out after that. It's a slight shaking of the steering wheel but noticeable.

I discovered that the key for changing the roof bar position is missing, the slot in the rear storage door is empty and no sign of the key anywhere - are these cheap/easy to replace?

The car gives a bit of a shudder on switching off, is this the norm?

Finally, there was a 3-bong alarm sound and I don't know whether it was a coolant warning (no light showing on dash) or a key in ignition with door open - is there a difference in these alarm sounds? I could only find 2 alarms mentioned in the manual, the door open and coolant level ones.

Thanks for any and all advice!

The brakes on my C5 - mainly the ones on the rear - squealed. I removed the pads and since they were fairly well worn, replaced them. No more squeal.

Hi John

I think I will go to my local garage who serviced the last car and get him to see if they are worn, although the car had an MOT very recently and then another one before the dealer released it to me, so they shouldn't be that bad. The dealer did say that if they were a cheaper type that might be a reason.

He said the shuddering at high speed might be wheel balancing or tracking although again it had passed its MOT, not that I know if those items are on the checklist. I might ask my local chap again to give it a quick once over. The dealer was perfectly happy to look at the things, but he's almost 90 miles away so too far to make sense for minor niggles.

Neither of the two faults would be picked up on MOT. If the brakes stop each wheel and they're balanced across the axle, it's a pass. Unbalanced wheels also wouldn't be picked up - unless the imbalance was caused by a fault in the tread or walls. You could try changing the wheels front to back and see if that improves the drive. Note that some tyres are designed to drive in only one direction.

Thanks for the tips John - I do know that it had 2 new tyres on it after their MOT and I think they swapped the old tyres for the front and put the new ones on the back. I would have thought they would do a wheel balance when they did that, but maybe not?
