Guest cloudberryC5 Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Hi to all , I am new to this site. As many others I am sure who watched the program Priced Of The Road - last night on ITV1, I was wondering if my diesel C5 would tolerate some veg oil? Has anyone here tried it?Do I need to put a special filter (as shown in the prog) in for the first 100 miles?Or can - like with some vehicles - I just pour some clean new veg oil in?What mix would you recommend? I am not proposing to use recycled cooking oil. I can buy veg oil at wholesale so dont need to take that risk. Any help and advice would be much appreciated, and hopefully it will be a useful thread for many other people too. Thankyou in advance! Quote

I know diesel is expensive but beer at £2.50 a pint = £20.00 a gallon so its not that bad. And if you look at the cost of given you one gallon of fuel to one gallon of beer. Plus there might even be legal issues with running on cooking oil. When i got caught running on the red diesel the fine was for running on unrebated fuel (not for using red but for not having paid duty on road fuel). So if using it for fuel on the road i would think that you would be in the same boat i was in if you got stopped. Please dont take my last statement as fact of law as i could be wrong its just as i see it. Also consider your diesel pump and management system would it want to run on it also any waranty on the vehicle wich i would imagine would become void as soon as you put it in your tank. Rather you than me anyway best of luck in whatever you put in your tank look forward to reading it on here.steve Quote
myglaren Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I haven't a cite for this but it is generally accepted that HDi engines and SVO do not mix well, if at all.The main problem is gumming of the cylinders leading to broken rings but a Lucas pump will die very quickly if exposed to SVO. I run mine on Biodiesel, previously made from WVO but this has been discontinued and it is now made from converted virgin rapeseed oil. Runs fine, just the same as dinodiesel. Quote
Guest mooro Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 That is correct, if you have not paid duty on road fuel then you can get a large fine i recall reading about a case where some one went to Asda and was buying 40 bottles of veg oil at a time, the store phoned the police as they thought some thing funny was going on and the person got a big fine Quote
myglaren Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Pottering around I rediscovered this site dedicated to Biodiesel, SVO and the like. Here is a very thorough explanaition or the reasons why not to. And this litle gem at the end of it:Currently, (as of June last year 07) The current Road Fuel Duty situation allows the 'private use' by Individuals of up to 2500 Litres per year of BioDiesel (By fiscal definition.....:() without the need to register and pay Duty to the HMRC--If in doubt, Post a Q in the HMRC thread for up to date information:P Quote
