Hywel Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I'm a new owner of a 2001 citroen xantia. The car seems fine but it only has one key no spare key.I have been asking Citroen dealers about getting a spare key cut & it could cost up to £100!Is there any way of getting a cheaper key cut?Cheers. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Unfortunately your key isn't just a "key" in the normal sense. It is possible to get the key blade reproduced by normal key cutters if they have the right blanks, but it doesn't stop there. Even the plain black key which should have come with your car contains a chip in the plastic handle which is interogated by the transponder in the steering column shroud. Even if the key is correct and will turn in the locks it will not start the car unless the chip is correct. That's why they're so dear and should be treated like gold dust! Have a look on Ebay. It's possible to pick up a 2nd hand "Plip" there which your dealer will be able to fit with the correct blade and programme it to your car. This should work out a bit cheaper. I'm afraid it's not like the old days when anybody with a Ford could get into and start just about any other Ford once things were a wee bit worn! (Thank Goodness!) Cheers. Hope this helps. Quote
