Rev Counter Xz 1.9d

hello ,my ageing xz 1.9d the rev counter has ceased to work

 

is it activated by a tdc pick up or the alternator?????

The pick up can be found running off the flywheel.....seem to remember it is at the rear of the engine, above the gearbox differential and pokes through from the engine block to the rear of the flywheel.
