Non-starting 2.0hdi

Driving all week, car fine as usual. Park up for the night and next day no starting! Engine turns over merrily, all warning lights go out but not a hint of actually firing. Any clues? I know this is a vast area of possible problems but it's never failed to start before and it was in use 12 hours earlier. Help! Norik :(

Maybe the fuel lift pump in the tank is not working. If so, I've heard that a thump on the underside of the fuel tank can jolt it into action.
