Would anyone 'fess up to using a 'fagamatic?

I mean, unless they have a pretty good reason like they lost their leg after stepping in a pirhana infested puddle, why should anyone be permitted to drive with a lazy left foot, and a mortal fear of the shifter?

My brother broke is back in the Army and lost feeling in his feet and that area so he can only drive with hand controls so thats why he has an Automatic. He will be changing his C3 1.4i SX Auto in Feb 2006. I suffer with feet problems aswell so I can only drive with handcontrols but I had a C3 1.6i 16v Exclusive Sensodrive. closest thing I can get driving to a manual.

Then that is a matter of hand controls, not of "Stick it in drive and leave it there."

Even I still managed to drive stick-shift U-Haul GMC Topkicks around Tacoma WA and US Army Deuce-and-halves on Ft. Lewis after a vicious attack from fire-ants in Orlando FL middle of last year. And that was with right leg the size of a small german sheperd.

Im not an auto fan at all although still drive one regualrly which is my mothers who has had most of both feet amputated she can still drive using the pedals just the clutch foot is completely gone and she also has back problems so has to drive an auto. Great for her. But i would much rather drive a manual. Just gets boring driving an auto i cant find a place for my left arm to go lol. Constantly drive with my hand on the gear stick.

Was funny first few times i drove the auto. Coming up to a junction go to push the clutch down to find the brake pedal left foot braking means you stop rather quickly generally. Was not too good. scared the crap outta me learnt my lessons quickly though lol.

My brother was in the Parachute regiment and broke his back in the Parachute accident so which means his back is held by metal plates and bolts and he lost the filling in his feet aswell so which means he can't use the pedals because he would crash the car if he did because he can't feel how far he is pushing down. I have feet problems which also means I can't feel how far im pushing the pedal down.

Anyway I just wanted to ask a Picasso Automatic their opinion on it.

From what I heard its a pretty thirsty sluggish affair and pretty rare.

Combo of an underpowered 2.0 litre engine with a slushbox does not make good reading.

4 speed tipronic auto which provides a poor return of about 30mpg but fair play to Citroen for providing the market with one. A bit of a niche an auto MPV with the added feature of cruise and tractioncontrol.

Suprised they never manufactured a diesel duto version.

And no I have not test driven one.

considering its 2.0i 16v it does the same top speed 119mph as my C3 1.6i 16v Sensodrive.

I was thinking maybe its greedy on fuel. My C3 is better on fuel than my brothers C3 1.4i SX Auto

The extra gear will be helping. Isnt the sensodrive 5 gears the auto will prolly be 4.

But most autos are thirsty on fuel and a bit sluggish in comparison to the petrol equivalents.

Only a few autos that are better than manuals. Mainly the ones from the VAG group. The new DSG gearbox on the golf gti is supposed to be amazing. Can change gear faster than we could. Resulting in quicker acceleration etc. Who cares if it uses more fuel...you wouldnt have bought a gti if you cared about that to begin with.

Some cars you just live with the fuel costs its part of owning the car.

Upon re-reading my posts, I have to apologise about how critical my response was.

I personally have a grudge against Automatics of all types, and that had clouded my judgement. For that, I am sorry. Being restricted is not easy. Most Americans feign a handicap so's to make their life easy. You'd see some fat chick in a QFC store riding one of those electric scooters with the shopping cart attached, claiming that her obesity is her handicap, or some chicken USMC phreak on North Fort Lewis going on about his knee injury he sustained in the Vietnam war (carefully omitting the part about how he has never been outside the Continental US and the injury was when he was fooling around with his CO's underaged daughter - or son [can't really tell with jugheads] ) just so he can park in a handicap space.

In the case of the Picasso Automatic, Pork Pie has hit it on the head. Citroen have sacrificed performance and fuel economy on the altar of convenience.

Alot of you have said what I thought to be honest but I wanted other opinions which you have given me. Citroens says the Picasso Auto does 32mpg. The C3 Sensodrive is 5 speed which is handy. Wonder will Citroen do a C3 1.6HDi 16v Sensodrive now they are not going to do the 1.4HDi 16v. are Citroen keeping the 1.4HDi 70hp on the C3 L and Desire models?

I saw a Picasso Automatic for sale on ebay and I emailed the owners asking what they thought of it. Shame Citroen couldn't have done a 1.8i 16v Auto in the Picasso.

Well the new motability deposits are out on 1/10/05 so will see if its high for the Picasso Auto. If he does have one I will see if he can get the Exclusive.

If you can drive a manual car you do have a wider choice. Like my neighbour had a new Motability car in Jan 2005 and he wanted a car which was nil Deposit So I narrowed a choice down to 3

Xsara Picasso 1.6i LX

C3 1.4i Desire

C3 1.4HDi Desire

So he picked the C3 Desire. When I went with him the Dealer was trying to push the C3 1.4HDi LX on him because that was also nil deposit and I said no he will have the Desire because its nil deposit and the Desire has Air Con and they added colour coded bumpers. But he would have gone along and had the LX if I wasen't there. So got to watch the dealers.

See my dealer was really helpful when i went in. Quite impressed ot be honest normally when i go looking at cars they look at how old i am and think im taking the piss a bit.

I might only be 21 but i have always had new cars. Once it gets to 3 years old i get rid of it. Went looking in the fiat garage the guy pretty much thought i was having a laugh so i went to the citroen garage booked a test drive of a C4 came back for the test drive 2 days later and ordered one there and then.

Back to the Automatics

The Picasso like most autos has a conventional torque convertor. An auto box is heavier than the equivalent manual (as much as 50kgs).

This along with the power losses associated with a fluid transmission unit (rather than a clutch) makes the car thirstier and belches more CO2.

To this day there is not one torque convertor auto that does better than 50mpg - even the diesels. Although the old Xsara hatch Hdi 110 did 49mpg on paper, most owners never got anywhere near this!

A crappy Pacific Rim 3 speed 1.0 Auto don't do better than 35mpg which is crepe.

Torque convertors really only suffice in large executive cars

============================================

However these modern CVT/MMT/Sensodrive/DSG systems use pulleys or several clutches. The units are as light as the manual versions they are based on and there are no such transmission losses which explains why these models have identical performance/C02 outputs and MPG. They are much more effecient.

In some cases, e.g Sensodrive units, the performances are even better.

==============================================

With all types of auto transmission though, they are a bu99er to repair if they go wrong.

The french cannot manufacture a decent auto box to save their lives.

Leave it to the Japanese who know a thing or two about autos - most if not all of their cars in that nation are autos. No diesels. Booooooooo!

I have a 1.2 16v clio 2 facelift at the moment. And its too slow for me.

Keep in mind i do take porsches out on the track as part of my degree the slowest car we have is the 5 litre beast of a jag.

I dont want a small car. I want a fast car unfortunately at 22 now most insurance companies dont particularly wanna insure me on anything with over 130bhp never mind the 200+bhp cars i was looking at originally. I could afford the car and running costs i just couldnt afford to spend over £7000 a year on insurace alone!
