Guest fusion Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008  hi guys as you can guess im havin some probs with my zx td volcane, ive fitted a new set of glo plugs yesterday, two of the old ones were dead ,on start up the engine sounds as if it is running on two cylinders (this was a prior problem before plugs were changed) and then catches and runs on all four(a bit lumpy at first) ,with guite a bit of smoke, its like when you change the fuel filter ,that sort of lumpy.when i am driving the car along the road ,when i do any acceration at all there is black smoke evident when i look in the rear view mirror, the car seems a lot faster than it should be ,is there any adjustment on the fuel pump, ive noticed an adjuster screw with a hole in it dont know if its supposed to be lock wired, ive not long got the car previous owner could have tampered with this item ,when i leave the car for any length of time, i allways let it heat first then start it ,but it sounds as if its not running on all cylinders as described. Ichecked the new glo plugs were working before fitting them, this is spoiling my enjoyment of what is a very good driving car. all hints and tips gratefully recieved. ps the car is a 1993 on an l reg. this car is up for sale if anyone wants her, just drop me a note on this forum fusion Quote
techbod Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 its been covered ut here it is again. Black SmokeThis is due to a air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean air (oxygen ) a few things to look for : Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100.000 to 120 000 miles) Faulty injector pump Dirty air cleaner Turbocharger or intercooler faulty Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR (exhaust gas recycling unit) Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Hi Fusion. It's possible that someone in the past has altered the settings on the fuel pump. If you're worried about it, take the car to a specialist outlet (Bosch or lucas depending on the system fitted) for their opinion and possible adjustment. Something to try first would be a dose of injector cleaner followed by a service, Oil, Filters etc. There are also fuel additives on the market which claim to clean engine internals, gas passages, turbo nozzles, blades etc of carbon build-up and restore efficiency. If you have a look at my "Mergi" thread http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citro...?showtopic=4530it has links to the website and will possibly do your car a lot of good. My Neighbour has recently sold his R reg Jeep Cherokee (Petrol) and the people who bought it have started using Mergi and report a 5 mpg improvement! Cheers. Hope this helps. Quote
